Knee Pain - anyone else get this?

Last few weeks Ive had really painful knees! Right one is far worse. It's a deep, dull pain and it's every day, in fact if been really active, the pain is that bad i rub volterol on it to help ease the pain. No noticeable swelling just pain.

Ive stacked alot of weight on recently - at least a stone and a half - at least! Wondering if it's got anything to do with that.

Anyone got any advice.

I get this in my right knee - I describe it as toothache in my knee if that makes sense?
I was diagnosed with arthritis and am losing the cartilage around my knee cap. I will need a knee replacement but am too young.
This was diagnosed a good few years ago and started as 'reactive' arthritis - I had an infection elsewhere but my body decided to attack the fluid around my knee instead of the place of infection.
This settled down after a steroid injection.
I then injured knee weightlifting and now due to loss if cartilage, my knee will click out of place occasionally - resulting in the 'toothache' pain and bring unable to straighten or bend knee properly until it clicks back. Or sometimes it will just ache when I've done too much.
When I've had enough of the steroid injections/they stop providing some relief, I'll hopefully be able to get a replacement.
Of course all of the above isn't condusive to the half marathon I'm training for!

Ah I see @MuthaHubbard - my knee used to creek when I walked upstair NEVER ever any pain.

But literally 2 weeks ago it started to ache - yeah I get it when you say toothache kind of pain - it's dull and really painful not sharp but deep and dull.

Im wondering if it was arthritis. Interestingly - and not sure if it this type of thing is hereidity - I ask because my Mum had both her knee caps replaced.

Im 53 - do you think I should go to the GP to get it checked out?

I get a deep, hot, sharp pain in one knee when I walk downstairs, downhill, lunge/squat during exercise and sometimes when I drive. Sometimes it locks.
I'd like to get it looked at but as it's not a permanent pain and doesn't prevent me from doing most things I figure it's not an urgent thing esp with demands on services. But I really should probably explore because it's def not right.
I'm late 40s, relatively fit, exercise regularly, walk my dog 90mins a day and not overweight. Knees are a bugger as you get older

Yankydoodledandy · 10/05/2022 22:08

@Gherkingreen you sounds positively fit so must be so annoying. Ive never had any hotness. Just felt my knee and it sounds abit creeky

Mum5net · 10/05/2022 22:12

@Gherkingreen i had similar to what you described and I got gp appointment before Xmas and then sent for X-ray. Turned out it was calcification of the platella tendon and there are exercises I now need to do
Downstairs far worse and hot searing pain.
OP- losing weight helps. I have put on 4 kgs since January and my knee pain much worse

ElephantLover · 10/05/2022 22:13

@Yankydoodledandy - might be worth checking out your gait at an orthotics or shoe shop. With age the arches can soften and cause misalignments that result in tissue loss and pain. Easily fixed with insoles and muscle building.

Yankydoodledandy · 10/05/2022 22:27

Ive been wearing cheap flat type converse style pumps lately - Ive stopped now as Im sure that hasnt helped.

I need to loose the weight as well but with the knee being creeky Im sure it will be arthritis or maybe cartlidge eroding etc.

Congratulations on getting to 53 before your knees went wrong!
Mine were knackered by 40. The cartilage wears away. Being overweight makes it worse. Mine got so much better when I lost a couple of stone.
There’s not a huge amount the doctor can do, maybe a steroid injection will give temporary relief, but it doesn’t last.
The best thing you can do is lose weight. If you do need a knee replacement eventually then they’re generally really successful.

Yankydoodledandy · 10/05/2022 22:34

Not bad enough for an injection - yep weight loss definitely starting

@Yankydoodledandy If you do consider a weight loss thread for your knees I will join you. Just tag me.

MuthaHubbard · 12/05/2022 21:08

@Yankydoodledandy Don't see any harm in getting a check up with gp, especially if it's not going away.
Mine first started when I was 36 sob
Am now 48 double sob but at least I know what it is now. Doc mentioned only starting to look at knee replacement when 'over 50' so I'm not far off
When mine is sore, it is worse going down stairs/hill etc, must be the way it bends when doing that sort of movement.
Hopefully you get to bottom of it or it buggers off 😊

So today been on my feet from 8am till 10pm...driving all around.
Very bizarre as no pain 🤷‍♀️

maybe you did no hills and stairs?
Definitely go to GP to ask for X-ray
if they don’t see you then head to a physio.
the physio should be able to give you exercises to strengthen other muscles so that your worn bits are better protected
