Blood in urine advice please!

Recently dipped my urine, and it has shown up +++ positive for blood. There is no visible blood in the urine. Is this worth bothering the GP with? Have had 2 uti's in the last year but last one was a few months ago. Advice would be welcome!

Could be an infection if there's blood. Do you have any other uti symptoms?

SabiRiver · 10/05/2022 13:48

No, no other symptoms. When I've had a uti I was very symptomatic so this is what is confusing me. No symptoms but blood showing up on the sticks.

Hi! I just had a cystoscopy today for this reason along with a scan on the kidneys. The urologist said that probably 1 in 10 just do have it for no found reason and I am one of those. I think mostly that’s the case but best to check it out to be sure so I’d go speak to your gp.

I did have a uti about a month ago which is why I discovered it x

Blood in urine, also known as hematuria, is a condition that can be caused by a variety of different things. It is always important to consult with your doctor if you are experiencing blood in your urine, as it may be indicative of a more serious health problem. In most cases, however, blood in the urine is not cause for alarm and can be treated relatively easily.
There are two types of hematuria: gross and microscopic. Gross hematuria is when you can see the blood in your urine; microscopic hematuria occurs when you cannot see the blood but it can be detected under a microscope. The causes of both forms of hematuria vary greatly and range from benign conditions like exercise-induced dehydration to more serious problems such as cancer or kidney stones.

Thanks for your replies, looks like I should give the gp a call then.

@ daphne890 how was the procedure? Was it as unpleasant as I am imagining?

I do urinalysis at our surgery and to reassure you, yesterday I had 6 urines (male and female) who showed blood in urine.

We send these off to be tested for UTIs but also for microscopy.

Please do not panic, call your GP surgery and they'll ask for a sample.

Dsis and I both had this. Mine was nothing, hers was cancer. Worth checking
The procedure was fine, they use numbing cream.

I have had 2 flexible cystoscopies for haematuria. Honestly you will not feel a thing.

My mum, who struggles with anaemia, had her urine dipped at the enterology hospital and it came back positive for blood. She then had it sent away for analysis and no blood was found. The consultant said it has a reasonably common experience that it gets picked up on dipping but shows negativd

Oops, I clicked on post instead of keyboard!

That's better.

Do you mind me asking why you are dipping your urine? I've not heard of this before.

LetitiaLeghorn · 11/05/2022 13:47

I don't know why the op dips hers, maybe because she gets UTIs, but I bought my urine strips for our guinea pig and then I thought I'd give it a go myself. It's so reassuring when everything looks normal. 😆

daphne890 · 14/05/2022 14:17

It was fine - a little uncomfortable but only for a few minutes. No cause found for the blood so it’s been out down to one of those things!

S22 · 18/11/2024 14:08

No cause found for mine too . But I still have it on dipstick. Not sure if they will do all the scans etc again ? Anyone else still have it after all the tests ?
