Anyone had type 2 diabetes without many symptoms?

I have been feeling a bit off, nothing specific but I will often feel quite tired. I also suffer from these strange ‘episodes’ which I can only describe as a kind of low blood sugar level, I will suddenly feel really hungry, internally shaky, lightheaded and as though I need to eat something quick and it needs to be something carby or sweet.
I don’t have an extra thirst or need the loo any extra than normal.
A friend suggested that I try an at home diabetes test.
I did one that required me to fast overnight.
The results came up quite high.
I don’t know how accurate these tests are and have made a gp appointment which isn’t until the end of the month but am a little concerned.
Has anyone developed type 2 without many symptoms?

My type 2 was discovered through a routine blood test I had yearly because of the medication I was on. I had gone from normal one year, skipped prediabetes and went to full blown diabetes at the age of 35 without any symptoms at all.

Was it a single finger prick test you did after fasting? What were the results?

If you buy a meter and some strips you can test several times between now and your GP appointment to get more of a picture of what your blood sugar levels are.

Gingerkittykat I had read there are many people with type 2 and they have no idea they have it. I had to fast overnight for the test so had gone 12 hours without food or drink, it was a finger print blood test. The reading was 200 mg/dl or 11.0 mol/L.

Yes 11.0 is high especially after fasting.

Hyperglycaemia symptoms can feel similar to hypoglycemia symptoms - 11 is definitely a high reading, it should really be around 7 or under.

Lots of pharmacies offer diabetes testing, if you'd rather get it checked sooner than later.

That is definitely high. When I had gestational diabetes my fasting BM first thing in the morning had to be under 5.3.

NewBootsAndRanty thank you, I’ve just had a quick Google and see my local Lloyds pharmacy offer the test so have booked for this week.

Good, glad they could offer a sooner appointment. Best of luck- let us know how you get on.

Do Lloyds offer a proper HBA1C blood test that measures average blood sugar levels over a 3 month period or just another fingerprick?

11 is a very high fasting reading, can you ask your GP if you can be seen sooner?

I also had no symptoms (that I attributed to t2 diabetes anyway, turns out my knee pain was caused by it) and was diagnosed after glucose showed in my urine at a midwife appointment and then had a hbac1.

They said I had it for several years, and even pregnant I never urinated frequently or had excessive thirst. I was 33 then so very young for it.

As pp have said, 11 is high even without fasting unfortunately.

Gingerkittykat It’s just the finger prick test. I did try to get an earlier appointment but they are full.
