Biopsy before hysterectomy

Hi

Just wondered if any of you ladies who have had a hysterectomy had a biopsy before it? I have spoken to 2 consultants- 1 said there is no point as it is coming out anyway and the other said it is standard procedure.
Don't want to go through anything unnecessary!

Just say no! They cannot do a biopsy without your consent - if they need to review any tissue - they can do it after your operation.

I'm on the waiting list for one and in the info sheets I was given said they check all the organs they remove and that can take a few weeks before results come back. I am not sure why you need a biopsy before it.

Thanks, my inclination is to refuse but don't want to do anything silly.

I have just been reading into this a bit a more and wondered if you had any biopsy's taken during any hysteroscopys? If not, that might be why they want to do it. I had one last year which was clear, as was a previous one so maybe why they haven't said I need to have another one? It could all change between now and when my booking in appointment happens though.

I’ve been told I have to have an endometrial biopsy. There is no sedation or anaesthetic for this (plus I’ve never given birth and my cervix is tilted, meaning it will be extra painful). If anyone knows whether it is possible to refuse this, I’d love to know. I’ve already been waiting months for this procedure too, and was told I wouldn’t be put on the waiting list for the hysterectomy until that was done.

You can refuse it. Just say no, I don't want it. It is your body and your choice.

Yes you can request a general anaesthetic and have it as a day case.

you don’t say in your post why you’re having the hysterectomy/what sort of hysterectomy you’re having, but it may be that the second surgeon is thinking different techniques may be more/less appropriate depending on the result of a biopsy. They’re probably the only person that can explain why they’re suggesting doing the biopsy though.

I’m having a hysterectomy next month but I didn’t have to have a biopsy. They could tell from the scans that I had a mahoosive fibroid decided that from the shape of it that it was unlikely to be cancerous. I guess they’ll know for certain once they whip it out and send it to pathology.

purplemachine · 09/05/2022 07:10

Thanks everyone. It is for a big fibroid. Both the consultants agreed that it would be an abdominal hysterectomy. It was the NHS consultant that said I would need a biopsy and the private one said I wouldn't. If he could have given me a reason when I asked why it was necessary that would be fine but he just said it's standard practice.

Sounds like the same op that I’m going to have! Sounds like fun, huh?! Not. 🤪

purplemachine · 09/05/2022 09:47

Wishuponastar77 yes, not really looking forward to it but I suppose it's for the best!!

My bits where taken and tested after they where out to make sure there was nothing dodgy there.

GinIronic · 09/05/2022 18:24

It sounds like the "standard practice" answer isn't for your benefit but for statistics. All the more reason to say no. If you are booked in for a total abdominal hysterectomy - what is the point of taking a tiny biopsy of the offending fibroid if the whole lot is being removed? Makes no sense.

Asimhereanyway · 09/05/2022 18:29

I had a ‘surprise’ biopsy during an examination by a female gynaecologist. She asked when I already had the speculum in and she was peering up. I didn’t really have time to think, assumed it was needed, so automatically said yes!

I did not have a biopsy prior to having my actual hysterectomy (Endo & Fibroids) a couple of years later.
