How to avoid getting stomach gas/wind?

mumznet · 06/05/2022 10:17

I get this alot, 40 years of age now. had it for the past few years. not gone to GP or anything, but my tummy is very windy and I can feel the wind in my tummy. Around ovulation time it gets worse and I have severe pain with the trapped wind. what can I eat or how to eat to avoid wind or how to reduce it?

thanks

What I thought was trapped wind pain turned out to be gallstones. Where exactly do you get the pain?

Threetulips · 06/05/2022 18:17

That’s what I was going to say! Femail and 40 is about average age for gallstones.

Usually worse with fatty food and usually with pain in your right shoulder and under your ribs.

SillySallySassySausage · 06/05/2022 18:19

Rennie deflatine helps me, I wish I'd found it sooner.

catsnore · 06/05/2022 19:26

I find gripe water really helpful! I get painful trapped wind after certain foods (dairy mainly). Keep a food diary for a bit and see if there are any obvious triggers.

longwayoff · 06/05/2022 19:44

If it's from food and not an undiagnosed illness then Mint is your friend. Mint tea is useful after a meal. A couple of Extra Strong Mints usually sort it out. Thus the fondness for mint tea in countries where people eat lots of pulses.

Thank you everyone, @GallstoneGlory I didn;t think it was gallstones, pain is in tummy area all the way to the lower region (ahem back passage) with passing of wind as well. usually the attack happens if I stand up and always around ovulation time.

I have noticed after reading on a thread somewhere about eating food too fast. I do eat fast as there is always something else to do, would that be causing wind?

@longwayoff is peppermint tea any good I was drinking that. I usually don't have fresh mint leaves, although I could buy the dried mint tea. also is dried mint tea still useful or does it have to be fresh mint leaves? thanks

@catsnore how much and how often do you take it? I thought its for babies so maybe all I am getting is a sweet taste?

I had all kinds of trouble and eventually, completely contrary to all the doctors' advice I'd received over the years, cut out fibre. I'm not suggesting you do this, it's quite drastic, but after 2 or 3 days my tummy was flat, and my digestive system silent and calm. I'd never known anything like it in my life.

Might be worth experimenting with, just as one of your tools to work out what's causing the trouble.

Meredusoleil · 09/05/2022 21:42

I am 46 and have similar issues. Mainly with dairy products like melted cheese or certain ice creams. I too tend to take Rennie or drink peppermint tea which helps to some extent.

Having read this thread though, I'm starting to worry I may now have gallstones (my mum had them for years and eventually had to have her gall bladder removed), as I have been having repeated pain in my right arm/shoulder and collar bone 🥺

mumznet · 09/05/2022 22:00

@Meredusoleil I hope you're okay. recently I had pain in my shoulder and neck but it was because of my odd shaped pillow.

thanks @Watchkeys im glad it worked for you. will try it, but it would be a bit hard to do....

I am always thinking about quitting milk...I don't know why but I think it doesn;t suit me. cutting milk isn't too difficult so I could try that.

I've had this for years, so it didn't start around 40. started in 20's. Does anyone think this is gall stones? I went to GP they said I have mid-cycle pain years ago.

I can feel the wind and feel better with passing wind, so I just thought this is wind. when there is the attack however, I need to sit down quickly, let the pain pass for about 20-30 minutes. try to release the gas. then I usually go ot bed early and rest..

I get this and have done for years-I don’t think it’s gallstones. The noise is the worst thing-it’s so loud and embarrassing-it sometimes sounds like ‘inner’ farts. 😫

Needaholiday101 · 09/05/2022 22:18

No dairy at all and peppermint tea helps me

mumznet · 09/05/2022 22:25

thanks @Needaholiday101 .

@Shinyandnew1 haha thats right about the gas!! do you get it exactly around ovulation time?

In 2020 I developed terrible windiness. Doc thought IBS. Woke up at 5am every day with sore stomach and awful wind. Diarrhoea too after meals. I cut all dairy out and it stopped. I love cheese but stopping the stomach pain was such a relief it was worth it.

mumznet · 09/05/2022 22:37

thanks @Callingallbutterflies did you have a milk substitute? almond milk etc? how to eat cereal with no milk or do we give up cereal too?

The pain that I felt when I have the attack usually starts to get worse if I stand up or walking around. usually whenever I have had ovulation discharge for a few days, then when I get up from sitting down, the sharp pain suddenly happens lasting 20-30 minutes. horrible but can be monthly or sometimes every few months,

Eat more slowly. Don’t take in air as you eat.
Don’t chew gum.
Ask Doctor to refer you for a colonoscopy.
It’ll probably go away after your menopause. It did with me.

90s2now · 09/05/2022 22:46

Peppermint capsules. You can buy them on Amazon and in most shops that sell vitamins and supplements.

I had horrible, painful trapped wind after my csection and the midwife gave me some Peppermint capsules to help. They work so quickly to pass the wind. As soon as they hit my stomach I let out a massive burp then they work their way through the body fairly rapid.

They are always my go to now whenever I'm bagged up.

You may have food intolerances, for me beans and legumes are my nemesis and cause all sorts of issues to the point I just can't eat them. Try FODMAP for a couple of months. Essentially you remove all high FODMAP foods from your diet and then slowly reintroduce them to determine which ones you're intolerant to. For some it might be onion and garlic for others it could be dairy but until you remove them and settle your gut for a couple of weeks on a very bland diet you won't know which ones are the cause. There is an App I recommend and it was developed by Monash University and was originally recommended by my gastroenterologist when I complained of similar symptoms to you. Good luck OP I hope you are able to resolve your discomfort.

Mrstumbletap · 09/05/2022 23:10

Onion and garlic are the worst for me. Dairy isn't great either.

Maybe try cutting out those ones as they are very high on the FODMAP diet

Stripyhoglets1 · 09/05/2022 23:14

Try low fodmap diet as mentioned.
I cut out onions and garlic and legumes
I take lactase tablets of I eat cheese or milky things.
Windeeze tablets and mint tea.

narcdad · 09/05/2022 23:20

Holland & Barrett pysilliam husk taken once a day, lots of water, walking after eating, smaller meals, limited gassy foods such as garlic, onion, cabbage, etc

@Meredusoleil I hope you're okay. recently I had pain in my shoulder and neck but it was because of my odd shaped pillow.

Thanks for asking. I checked out the symptoms of gall stones and they don't sound like what I've been having.

I think my issues are mainly dairy related and fast eating. Doctors have ruled out IBS, dairy and lactose intolerance though 🤷
