Hello everyone.
I'm looking for some advice regarding having an endoscopy. I have an appointment this afternoon and I'm absolutely terrified. I have severe anxiety disorder so I haven't been able to sleep all week and my heart keeps racing when I think about what's coming up today. I am going to get sedation but I'm worried, will I be asleep? Will I suffer gagging ? Are you awake throughout and just get amnesia afterwards so you forget the whole process? I need any words of wisdom of anyone who has had one as I feel that nervous I probably will freak out and be unable to do it. Thank you 😊

Waystation so you must of been completely out of it? That's what I want I don't want to be fully coherent and alert as that will make me alot worse. Did you have yours done via NHS? And I know I shouldn't back out but my anxiety keeps telling me to run for the hills lol. Xx

Jetliner was yours done NHS as most reviews of people who have been out of it are all private clinics and that's why I was nervous incase they give me a tiny amount of midazolam and I'm wide eyed watching what's happening that honestly makes me so nervous xxx

All I remember is they put something in my mouth and said swallow. I thought I can't but I did. Next thing I knew I was waking up in the recovery. All finished.

Inigomontoyahwillcox are you in the US or UK. I'm in the UK? I know the US use propofol etc which knocks people out to sleep.

I'm in the UK, I had it at a private hospital but via the NHS, if that makes a difference! Pretty sure I had midazolam.

NorthMumOfTwo · 05/05/2022 13:10

Viviennemary what sedation did you have?

If you had it via NHS it will of been midazolam as I think that's all they offer. I just hope it works as alot of people it hasn't worked for which makes me panic. Do they put the IV in your hand or arm ?

I’ve had two, one without and one with. Sedation I had midazolam. I know I had it done but honestly I remember the start and the rest is hazy. You might gag but if you’ve fasted there’s not much to vomit - if you do they use suction to clear anything in your mouth. It’s over in about 5 minutes too. I had to get a lift home and be looked after afterwards, you can’t drive because it impairs your judgement.

Do tell the staff you have severe anxiety about it. They’ll try ti reassure you and may give you extra sedation!

That's one of the things I don't want to do is gag as I have severe reflux so I'd be terrified bile will come up etc. I will mention all my concerns and see what they suggest as I'm a wuss when it comes to these kinda things

How did it go @ItsMutinyontheBunty?

Viviennemary · 05/05/2022 19:44

Just a jab thing in my hand. Sedation. Not general anaesthetic or anything like that.

Viviennemary · 05/05/2022 19:45

Hopd it all went well. Sorry I didn't see your question earlier.
