Recurrent thrush impacting my mental health

I have been plagued with thrush for over 4 years (started when I was 19 and I am 24 next month) - it all started once I started when I lost my virginity with my current partner. I tried treating it with Canesten but it returned every months so I eventually got put on a 6 months fluconazole treatment which cleared it while I took the tablets but it returned when I stopped (I have done this 6 month treatment three times now). My thrush tends to appear the week before my period - I came of the combined pill to see if this would help but the thrush still comes back every month. I have tried changing to natural toilet paper and pads (stopped using tampons) only was with an emollient and always make sure I shower after sex. I have tried dozens of different expensive probiotics and natural antifungals but nothing works. I have also tried to do the anti candida diet a few times - but I always stop around the 1-2 month mark as it makes me so miserable and I already have a few existing issues around eating. I have also had blood tests to check diabetes, thyroid, vitamin issues but they all come back saying I am in good health. The thrush makes me utterly miserable and I find myself shutting of from everyone around me including my very understanding partner who also always treats himself with the tablet and cream. The fluconazole is clearly not working and in fact is probably leading to more gut issues as it also kills good yeasts so I am terrified of taking it long term again, all I want is to live the normal life of a 23 year old!

Have you tried non latex condoms? I'm a bit sensitive to latex.

Have you tried multigyn flora plus gel off amazon to help with the pH of your lady bits?

I find thrush less likely on holiday. I'm wondering if it's to do with chlorinated swimming pool water or salty sea water. Answers on a postcard please

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow It’s to do with an over reactive immune response.

I am going through investigations for autoimmune conditions, v interesting.

I had vulvodynia too! Bloody miracle we ever managed to make a baby 😂

@PraiseBee Interesting - I do all the things listed (other than condoms but trying that this month!) Did you change your diet to remove sugar?

Under the care of a nutritionist I ate low sugar, low yeast + supplements and gradually returned to a normal diet.

Oh and if you ever have babies look out for oral thrush when they are newborn. Both mine had it and it went into my breasts and that is another world of hell. Plus most doctors don't know the protocol to treat it with mum and baby. I'm obviously a thoroughly thrushy person.

I no also found it slightly improved as l got older. Probably due to declining oestrogen. My 20’s were the worse.

Menopause has been pretty crap too.

kittykat818 · 17/05/2022 20:17

@PraiseBee How long did you do the diet for? And are you 100% free from thrush now? Thanks!

@Caramac555 We don't tend to use condoms in general but we are going to try this month! I have tried multigyn but it didn't seem to help and always stung me!

You have my sympathy, it’s so miserable. I tried everything and the only thing that made it go away was a new partner! I only seemed to have it with that one person weirdly and we were together for years

AmadeustheAlpaca · 17/05/2022 20:37

Op, have you ever been tested for diabetes, recurrent thrush is common in untreated diabetes.

Crispynoodle · 17/05/2022 20:41

Have you been tested for diabetes?

Ah yes this is a worry for me. I have only ever been with him so it could very well be my reaction to him but honestly I am so happy in my relationship so I hope it isn't that! Did you and your previous partner use condoms? Thanks :)

I think I went hardcore for 3 months then eased items back in but did mostly stick to the nutritional advice going forward. I avoided bread and pasta etc for a long time, continued with my supplements. Only reoccurrence I've had is post babies and it was mild. I think a combination of prolonged use of sanitary towels post birth and being very run down with a newborn.
I now eat whatever I want but do eat healthily and am thrush free. I'm no longer into normal chocolate and sweets. They are too sweet for me. I think my tastes changed as a result. Eat a tonne of dark chocolate though! I imagine if I was very unwell/run down/stressed/had another baby it would probably make an appearance.
I can honestly say that my nutritionist transformed my life. I was mildly unwell all the time. I've learnt how to fuel my body properly.
I also still use latex free condoms and can't use fragranced sanitary products etc.
