CRP level a bit high, investigations when, what?

Hi,

I had a blood test done for something, most of it was normal except my CRP which was a "bit" high.

I had to have another CRP blood test done a month later to check level and for any drop in level, it dropped by 1 in a month.

Again, wait a month have another test.

What happens next if the level hasn't dropped enough to be near normal levels does anyone know?
When would more "thorough" investigation start or would it be another month and check?
It's 3 months nearly since first high ish result.

Thanks

Impossible to answer this with the information given.

Any idea why specifically a crp was done?

Loads of doctors just do a battery of tests when they don't have a good idea what the diagnosis might be, problem is, if you're fishing like that and a highly non specific test like crp is a normal, it doesn't help much.

In a well patient I'd ignore an isolated mildly raised crp until new symptoms appeared to guide a diagnosis.

Thank you,

Yes, a whole load were done, crp was high, so I've had to repeat that a couple of times now and again next week, because it doesn't seem to be dropping much.

What would you say is mildly raised?
Just curious what if I'm on monthly needle jabs for the next however long till it's "normal" or if something else would happen.

What was the CRP reading?

emmaluggs · 01/05/2022 18:13

I’d be interested in what level it is. I presented to A&E, they took bloods my levels were 94, and the drs seemed non fussed, I went back to the GP 4 weeks later and they had dropped to 34, I’ve just had another load done and I’m hoping these will be within normal levels, but I think my 94 is classed as rather high for what I presented with, and googling suggests that some people with inflammatory conditions such as chrons can get up to 500s

PurpleFadesToGreen · 01/05/2022 20:02

Gosh, no not that high !

I was told under 5 is "normal", and mine was 15, dropped to 14 last month and have to go back for another blood test this month because it's still "high" ??!!

So sounds like my Dr is being OTT then.

Thanks , I'll just enjoy being a pin cushion 🙄

<5 is normal you are right, but 14 isn't concerning. Upto 100 is considered moderately elevated and over 100 is of more concern. But having said that, as a stand alone piece of information it's not much use. It needs to be considered alongside a bigger clinical picture.

Do you have any other medical conditions at all OP? However minor

PurpleFadesToGreen · 01/05/2022 20:47

Not that I know of?

15 would indicate mild inflammatory process.
CRP is of value when interpreted with haematology and clinical symptoms.

PurpleFadesToGreen · 01/05/2022 22:02

So if its not serious, why is my Dr requesting monthly bloods to check it??

Thanks everyone

That’s definitely not considered ‘high’ any form of mild infection can raise it to that. I assume he’s rechecking it to make sure it doesn’t go any higher but unless you have other symptoms sounds like he is being a bit over keen.

Between 50-100 would be slightly concerning, over 100 would need investigating fairly quickly.

People with inflammatory bowel disease can often run into hundreds.

PurpleFadesToGreen · 07/05/2022 20:29

So, I've had another crp test and no change this time , last month it had dropped by 1, this month stayed the same.

Dunno if dr will say anything?

Thanks everyone.
