cystitis and inflamed bladder

I have had a uti that has taken 3 weeks and two 7 day courses of antibiotics to clear. Dipsticks are now showing the infection has cleared but I am still getting a lot of bladder pain and burning in my urethra. I have been told this is likely due to the infection causing irritation and inflammation. Has anyone else had this before and how long did it take for everything to settle down and the pain to go away as I am really struggling.

Have you tried Ibuprofen?
it’s anti inflammatory and I find it helps.

Caf123 · 01/05/2022 11:23

I had a uti about 4 weeks ago. I only had two doses of antibiotics and only 3 days at a time but felt after the second week it still didn’t feel right. I would say now 4 weeks on I’m nearly there but sometimes still have a feeling of irritation. I actually still have microscopic blood too so having a cystoscopy in a couple of weeks to investigate that.

How did you get on? I'm now having this problem, took antibiotics for uti... Sample clear but still having some of the symptoms albeit not the original really horrible ones.

TheVolturi · 14/05/2022 09:37

I recently had a uti but have a long history of them, albeit not for a long time until the recent episode. I really recommend buscopan. You can buy it from any supermarket and b&m etc as well as pharmacy. It will say for ibs but it works by stopping the crampy spasms that make you think you need a wee. I personally stay away from ibuprofen when suffering with uti because it's not helpful to the kidneys. I also take concentrated cranberry capsules these days, since my last episode. Some good reviews on these at preventing uti.
Coffee and tea will definitely irritate your bladder so try to cut down on these if you can.

I found this resource liveutifree.com/ to be really useful. From my own experience I also had symptoms which lingered and were explained by the doctor as inflammation. They did gradually improve but it took several weeks. This seems to be an area of medicine which which needs more attention though. The dipstick tests are not very reliable and neither is the way the urine samples are cultured. There was an expert on this subject on R4 woman’s hour not long ago, probably still available on BBCIsounds, and the issue has even been raised in parliament. Sorry that doesn’t help you with current discomfort but might help if you take this back to GP at any point. In addition to recommendations above re current discomfort I would also think about some prebiotics. Big sympathy that you are experiencing this, UTIs are horrid 💐

D mannose was a life saver for me. Buy tablets online.

Yes, I had a uti in December and I'm still getting the burning in my urethra like I need to go to the loo all the time. I think I had a gap of around 2 weeks last month with no symptoms then It came back.

D mannose changed my life too! Used to get UTIs multiple times a year but haven't had one in years thanks to it. I bought capsules on Amazon

Thanks so much for your posts - this makes me feel less alone. I had a smear test in February and UTI symptoms started a week later. I am now on my 5th course of antibiotics and they no longer seem to be working as the discomfort is back with a vengeance. I’ve been prescribed Hiprex but it’s doing nothing at all. Anyone else had this? It’s making me so miserable. I literally need to pee all the time.

Lrb21 · 06/02/2023 11:13

I have the same feelings and it’s making me miserable :( did you find anything to help with this??

Eastereggglutton · 06/02/2023 13:46

@Lrb21 yes I did, I have found out it was just inflammation I had an embedded uti. I have been under treatment from Prof Malone-Lees team in harley street and I am much better.

That’s brilliant I am glad you are feeling much better! Do you mind me asking which antibiotics you are taking as part of the treatment?

I stumbled across this post while desperately trying to find some ideas to help my daughter. She finished a course of antibiotics for a UTI a few weeks ago but is still having very bad symptoms - mostly feeling like she still needs to pee when she’s just been to the toilet. We went back to the doctor and her urine came up as clear when they tested it and when it was sent to the lab. It’s starting to affect her schooling as they keep sending her home when the symptoms are bad. She was also on antibiotics for tonsillitis and an ear infection before this (3 lots of antibiotics in a month 🙈) so I’m wondering if this could have something to do with it? She has been having frequent poos too which aren’t quite diahorrea but aren’t normal (sorry if TMI!) so I’m wondering if all her good bacteria has been completely wiped out by all the antibiotics?

Eastereggglutton · 23/02/2023 09:18

@Headsup101 how old is your daughter? Clear urine tests don't mean no infection, they are unreliable this is even mentioned on the nhs website. You could try getting her hiprex which is a bladder antiseptic rather than an antibiotic.

Thanks so much for your reply. She is only 7 - I feel really sorry for her. The pain seems to have gone now but she still gets the feeling that she needs to pee more as soon as she’s been to the toilet. I will look into hiprex.
She had the same recurrent urine infections about 18 months ago and was referred to the hospital for a full scan which was all clear and an appointment with a specialist nurse. As luck would have it, it had all cleared up by then! The doctor has said she will contact the hospital again to see what we can do.

Hi,

how’s your daughter doing now? My 4 year old has the same issue with feeling like she needs another wee as soon as she’s finished. We’re waiting on a referral to a specialist to get her some help as the GP can’t find what the issue is :(
