Bugger! Is it possible for thrush to come back two weeks after you've just treated it.

Am 33 weeks pregnant and had bad thrush over new year and was able to get something from the chemist as no doctors appointment on new years eve. Went away fine but now I'm starting to feel uncomfortable again.

Anything I can do to stop it becoming full blown thrush or do I need to go to the docs?

if you're pregnant and it's recurring would go back to the docs. It's also possible that your DP/DH has thrush too so if untreated, could reinfect you if you've had sex since then (wasn't asking and don't need to know!)

PandaG · 10/01/2008 22:59

it is the pits - my sympathies

practically, cut out refined sugar, and iron the gusset of your knickers - does seem to help reinfection

cornsilk · 10/01/2008 23:02

was going to say the sugar thing also - avoid anything with sugar in. Didn't know about ironing gusset of knickers. Are you allowed to use canesten? Blast it before it gets a chance to take hold.

worrier27 · 10/01/2008 23:04

awwww poor you!

I didn't have it with DD but with DS I had it and it's no fun.

I'd go back and see doc this time/midwife and see what they suggest before you go using cream etc...

PandaG · 10/01/2008 23:04

ironing was what gp recommended - I had very reccurrent thrush while pg, used canesten cream but not thje pessaries iirc

Spidermama · 10/01/2008 23:07

This method worked for me in pregnancy and it's a little weird so bear with me ...

Peel a garlic clove. Put a few drops of tea tree oil in it. Thread a length of cotton through the clove (for easy retrieval), push it up your fanny overnight and pull it out in the morning.

Also you MUST avoid sugar and yeast.

You should also take acidopholus bifodus. A good make, from the health food shop. This puts in the microflora that are meant to keep the thrush at bay.

Good luck.

Cremolafoam · 10/01/2008 23:11

don't know if you can take this if pg but the pill diflucan one you can get combined with the cream should sort it out.

Yes it kills the thrush, but it doesn't change the conditions in which the thrush was able to survive so there's no guaruntee it won't come back.

That's why it's so important to cut our sugar, yeasty foods (ie bread) and to take Acid_Bif.

BecauseImWorthIt · 10/01/2008 23:21

And don't go for Yakult or Actimel, or any of those probiotic drinks because they're full of sugar as well.

Cremolafoam · 10/01/2008 23:25

just reading about the pills- not suitable if pg.
i used to get thrush a lot- i'm diabetic and prone and find vinegar or rachels organic plain yog both helpful.if it keeps coming back definitely look at lifestyle- reduce sugar intake, coffee and things like white bread and mushrooms(which contain yeast /fungus) are best avoided

cornsilk · 10/01/2008 23:38

did you put the vinegar on your food cremolafoam? (serious question)

ConnorTraceptive · 11/01/2008 11:07

Thanks for the advice. The chemist did give me a pessary last time and it worked in hours but I will go back to the doctors this time.

Will be careful about what I eat too.

DW has chronic thrush. Change in diet to no sugar,no fruit juice, only a few pieces of fruit a day, no refined flour, no mushrooms, no fermented food, daily yoghurt and acidophilus, plus topical treatment, has helped to get it under control. Unfortunately, this is forever, as thrush is systemic and an airborne infection.

Just using the creams etc is a little like cutting the grass - you'll get rid of the top layer, but not the whole infection.

If you start this wholeheartedly, you may feel worse for a couple of days. THis is called "die-off" as the thrush dies and decomposes in your system, releasing a load of toxins.

Hope you get it sorted. DP should get treated too, and should without saying follow the eating restrictions as well.

BecauseImWorthIt · 12/01/2008 18:03

avoid the fruit! It's full of sugar!

JingleyJen · 12/01/2008 18:08

Yep - I got it when breastfeeding (oral thrush and boobie thrush) seemed to clear it for a few weeks then get it again.

Triathlete · 12/01/2008 19:16

BIWT - I know, but she has to have something. It seems fine at the moment, and all she eats is apples and the occasional mandarin, no melons or mangos. She loves fruit too.
