weight watchers online - that way you only pay for one but both of you can use the facilities
quite expensive though

needmorecoffee · 10/01/2008 10:58

I lost 2 stone with slimming world. really recommend it as its easy with no counting.

Twinkie1 · 10/01/2008 10:59

Slimming World - DH and I do it together - is really easy to do when there are 2 of you and you both have to eat the same things.

I lost 10lb and DH 17lbs (although he had far more to lose than me!)

He goes down to be weighed and comes back and puts the dinner onand then I go down there so we don't have to pay anyone tohave the kids!

FairyFay · 10/01/2008 11:00

dh and i started by telling each other what we'd eaten each day. we found it made us less tempted to be 'naughty' if we'd have to confess later.

singyswife · 10/01/2008 11:01

thing is we cant really afford to be joining anywhere. Is there a way we can do it without joining somewhere??

OP posts:
MamaG · 10/01/2008 11:03

Yes, I recommend SW too. If you join it will cost you £10 but you get the book, if you were really skint, don't go back but follow the book and the long threads on here, lots of us are doing it and its great to nip on here and say "oh can I have x and y" - you always get a quick response.

I've lost 2 stone since 6 September and you can eat LOADS

(have just put 2.5lbs back on though, over christmas, but we don't need to discuss that!)

ComeOVeneer · 10/01/2008 11:06

This site is quite useful particularly for low fat recipes.

Another vote for Weightwatchers here. You could go to a meeting, join up and get the info then do it yourself. There are many offers at the moment where registration is free, so you'd only pay the fiver for the meeting. Worth buying the Shopping Guide and the Eating Out guide too. You could then do a weekly weigh-in at home.

singyswife · 10/01/2008 11:29

I know that my dh wouldnt go to meetings etc and he also wouldnt eat the "strange foods" which were in the books. Needs to still be a plain simple diet that is going to lead to weightloss.

Another Weight Watchers vote from me - dh and I have followed it together in the past with good results.

If you can't afford the meetings you can get the books from someone that has given up or get them off Ebay.

Then get someone to explain the plan to you and how it all works.

Make sure you dedicate a day to a weekly weigh in so you have something consistant to stick to.

Once I learned the weight watchers plans I did it at home. It is harder to resist temptation but it is possible if you have enough will power!

sweetheart · 10/01/2008 11:32

also = there aren't any "strange foods" on the weight watchers plan - the whole point of it is that you can eat whatever you want. Dh was the same - refused to eat what he called "diet food". When doing weight watchers I make home made curry, chilli, spag bol etc etc etc

All normal foods which are well within my allowed points!

witchandchips · 10/01/2008 11:34

Give up one treat a day and try to add one good bit of exercise of week.

so if you have a latte at work, swap this for tea or black coffee. If you drink 2 glasses of wine a night, bring this down to 1. Then go for walk with children at w/e

ime small changes like this are more affective. They have no quick results but you are more likely to sustatin them

Nooname · 10/01/2008 11:34

Ok, make sure you both have a really big and filling breakfast - as notjustmom says porridge is brilliant - it is really filling.
I do porridge with milk, raisins and dried apricots. Recent research shows that eating breakfast makes you more likley to lose weight and less likely to gain it as it kick-starts your metabilism.

Then I would say, only snack on fruit - a banana if you're hungry.

Make lunch something wholemeal - again slow release.

Tea something filling like pasta and then don't eat after tea.

Excercise, exercise, exercise!

Good luck!

witchandchips · 10/01/2008 11:35

Think i read somewhere that reducing your calorie intake by 100 or so a day will mean that you will lose a stone in 6 months.

Nooname · 10/01/2008 11:36

Oh yes and top tip from my dh - if you have a vice don't give it up totally, just restrict it. If you give it up you are more likely to crave it and give in.

Eg I like my lattes but I am trying to lose my xmas weight so have restricted myself to one a week. Also Friday night is bar of chocolate night. Then I don't feel I CAN'T have these things so not so bad not to have them every day.

Nooname · 10/01/2008 11:41

Sorry - this is on my mind at the mo as I am dieting too!

I don't think it matters you have two dds, just cook healthy meals and eat them as normal - it is the snacking which is the problem (assuming you are eating healthy meals that is).

Easy healthy meals we do:

Pasta, tuna or tofu (just normal tofu cut up into cubes (my ds 19mo particularly loves this also its cheap and v good for you!), tinned toms, pesto, sweetcorn

Salmon, veggies, couscous/rice

Baked potatoes, veggies, tuna mayo/sweetcorn.

Spaghetti bolognaise made with quorn mince with grated carrot and grated courgette mixed in.

Quinoa with vegetables

(we don't eat meat, that helps - perhaps cut out meat for a few weeks?)

Nooname · 10/01/2008 11:44

Also (sorry) my friend who does do WW told me last night that most vegetables have no points, but peas and sweetcorn do due to the sugar content. So other vegetables can be eaten more of to fill you up.

ska · 10/01/2008 11:45

i used the GI eating plan and tescos ediet (to log progress it was 1.99 a week for 100 weeks). lost about 1 1/2 stone over 3 months slowly and sustainably including making myself walk for half hour each day (easiest exercise to fit in) 2 years ago. realy easy once got in the habit of cooking the meals and very adaptable, even lost 3 lbs when on holiday not trying at all! totally recommend it. so much healthier now

ska · 10/01/2008 11:47

you don't need to buy anything - my library has a couple of the books i bought to use and lots of on line stuff. i failed with SW i am afriad - i neded it to be completely easy and so as teh kids didn't realsie i was 'dieting' - i have ateenager and didnt want to make her too foof obsessed

foxythesnowman · 11/01/2008 09:40

Its pretty simple really. Increase activity/decrease calorie intake.

So, if you are a bit more active and switch to low fat alternatives, watch your saturated fat and sugar intake you should notice a difference.

Really must apply that to myself ...

EffiePerine · 11/01/2008 09:47

Bear in mind that if you are both dieting your DH will probably lose the weight faster. Which is unfair. Something to do with the way fat is stored and the size of the liver or something.
