Anyone know about blood test results?

Hi, I’m hopeful someone might be able to help who is knowledgable about blood tests. I’m feeling a bit rubbish with crappy heavy, cloth periods and have had several blood tests. I’ve got access to my results and some of them are lower or higher than the ‘normal’ range, yet my GP told me they were all fine. For example, My MCH is 33.4 (normal upper limit is 32) MCHC is 362 (upper limit is 360). Serum inorganic phosphate is 1.67 (upper is 1.45). Heamatocrit and eGFRcreat are both just below the lower limit. Monocytes is 1.0 (upper is 0.8). I don’t know whether I should be questioning it or not! Is it worth me bringing it up or is this normal?

Did you get the ranges from your GP? Ranges can vary slightly from lab to lab so if you got the ranges from Google that may account for the difference.

MCH suggests you’d benefit from extra B12 and folic acid in your diet. If you had iron deficiency anaemia you expect MCH to be low.

thank you @KenaSpirit the ranges were listed next to my results on the nhs app. I wouldn’t have thought anything of it if they weren’t there, as I had no idea what they should be. I can see they are close to the limits, I just wondered if close is fine, or if for some reason there’s been a mix up and they are not ok results. My GP surgery is great. I had a previous GP surgery many, many years ago when I was rather ill who lost results, didn’t send samples off and didn’t ask to test for the correct thing so I am being a bit paranoid.

I thought the GP would say I’m anaemic but like you said the MCH is high.

I will speak to my GP about a supplement, I have a consult with them next week (following a scan which was again, fine), I just wondered if the numbers were worth asking about. Thank you so much

I recently had tests for irregular bleeding and heavier periods. I had raised mcv and mch. They then did bloods for ferritin, b12 and folate which came back normal. Nothing more has been said. Although I do take a vitamin supplement which contains b12 and folic acid so now wondering if these could have effected results as have since read that they can. Interestingly mcv and mch has been raised for a few years on blood test and no one has commented on it until now, all previous tests said satisfactory no further action needed and last year they were higher than they are now!
Maybe call and query it. They may offer to check b12 and folate levels.

There is a few types of anaemia. Iron deficiency anaemia is associated with a low MCH (but they should do and iron profile too). High MCH would point towards a macrocytic anaemia like a B12 or Folate insufficiency. That could also cause symptoms of feeling crappy and tired.

In terms of the ranges, most of the time being a little out of range is not an issue. The results are also looked as a whole so say MCH is a tiny bit out range but everything else related is in normal
range then it wouldn’t be an issue.

You could try taking a B12 supplement but that said if you don’t feel good and you are having heavy periods with clots then I’d ask them
to do further investigation. Test results should be looked together with clinical judgment. If it was just about the numbers a robot could be a GP.

Thank you so much for your replies both of you, @KenaSpirit that's really reassuring! I've got a follow up next week so will mention b12 and folic acid too. I’ve had a scan which was fine so looking at what the next step is then too.

I’ve had mine tested this week and my Mch was 34.1…so today had b12 tested and it was 244 which is apparently in range…so I think they are assuming all is fine and one of those things??
