Ankle ligament recovery, normal or not?

So, I fractured my 5th metatarsal 8 weeks ago and also had swelling to my ankle, A&E told me I had likely stretched the ankle ligaments too, hence the swelling and to expect full recovery in 6 weeks.

8 weeks later, my ankle is still oddly shaped, stiff and painful after walking or if it moves at an odd ankle (uneven ground etc)

not sure if this is just a normal part of recovery or needs to be seen again, anyone done similar?

Ankle ligaments can take a crazy long time to recover from injury in my experience. If you can get it seen again then do, and ideally get advice from a sports injury therapist or a physio.

Thanks, that’s good to know, as they didn’t really say much about the ankle, they were only concerned with the break in my foot, gave me a boot and said take it off when you feel better. No follow up either I’ve just been left to get on with it so wasn’t sure what’s normal.

I'm no medical but your ankle doesn't look right. Was it x-rayed at the same time as your foot? I'd be asking my GP for advice if nothing else. Hope it heals up soon.

A physio told me a sprained ankle could take up to 16 weeks. Are you icing it?

I fractured my heel bone last August and also partly tore ligaments in my foot and both sides of my ankle. I’m still doing physio exercises yet!

I had 2 sessions of NHS physio, then went to a private physio/sports injury specialist for rehab. I finished physio in February, but was told to keep doing the exercises because ligament recovery can take up to a year.

Yes still icing and elevating, wouldn’t be so bad if I had been told what to expect long term or some sort of follow up but nothing

Ouch, sore one!
I had no idea recovery could take so long as they only advised me on the fracture, the ankle was pretty much ignored.

Attached pic was mine after the fall, so quite similar.

I chipped a bone in my foot 4 weeks ago tripping down some uneven dodgy unlit concrete stops and did some "mild" tendon damage. The pain! I had very similar swelling and bruising and oddly a a perfectly round golf ball sized bruise on the sole of my foot? I am still wearing the boot for the majority of my waking hours but trying my best to walk a little and at the same time not over do it. I can potter at home for 5 minutes and it's ok but I'm " Aware" of it all the time the boot is off. But the second it's uneven flooring, even the tiniest bit of a slope or steps and it's a big fat NOPE. The pain even now is lightening hot . I did something similar to this when I was 18 and it took 18 months to be normal again 😬

This is interesting. In Dec 2020 I broke my ankle. 4 weeks in a boot and contact them if I still have problems.
they did an mri scan and said bad tendon/ligament damage.
That is now starting to feel better but apparently Ive overcompensated with my other foot and got Achilles tendinitis which to be honest is worse than the break. I’m in dreadful pain practically all day.
I have a scan in it later this week but I sincerely hope it gets better soon 😔

The A&E I attended was the same, only interested in the fracture but it was the ligament damage that caused excruciating pain! The only treatment that helped me was the private physio. I pretty much had to learn to walk properly again and it took 6 months.

Hopefully it won’t take so long for you. My physio said the main thing is to keep moving it, within pain tolerance, so gentle movements, to prevent it stiffening up.
