High ALT, raised amylase, blood in stool, long periods between passing stools, inflammation markers, weight loss.... Really worried about a loved one and he's scared he has pancreatic cancer.

Really could use someone to talk to. Even if it is just online. I hate this worry. He's got a scan on Monday.

He does have some worrying symptoms, has he said how long he has had the symptoms for, especially the altered bowel function ? Its good he has a scan on Monday, at least he should get some answers sooner rather than later. Horrible wait for you though Sad

HI didn't want to read and run although I don't know anything about Pancreatic cancer aside from it is really pretty rare especially in younger people so try not to think worse case scenario. I think a lot of people do fear this cancer as it is often diagnosed late but there could be any number of conditions it could be apart from this. Pancreatis? Try and stay off Google until Monday, you won't find anything reassuring and most articles will end up mentioning the C word! Hopefully you will get some answers then.

Wishing you and your loved one all the best.

Sorry OP I can’t diagnose him obviously but will keep fingers crossed for you. Just be a good support to him, listen, don’t interrupt. I wish you both well.

Altered bowel only about a week. Weight loss has been over a month or so. Everything else I'm not sure.

He's in his late 40s. Trying to stay positive for him until the scan. It's hard to know what to say.

It's good he's seeking advice. It could be a lot of things. Please update us when you can.

My DDad's first symptoms of pancreatic cancer was jaundice, pain and sudden weight loss.
Hope all goes well on Monday.

OnthePiste · 26/04/2022 06:40

How did the scan go OP?

PacificWalrus · 26/04/2022 06:51

I have a loved one recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer - he didn't present with those symptoms. His first real obvious symptom was painless jaundice - which is the major red flag for this cancer. Other than than that he can only remember slight loss of appetite, being a bit gassy but nothing out of the ordinary.

All I can say is that it could be a number of things - our minds always go to the worse. Sending hugs.

WaspStingsAreAwful · 28/04/2022 20:12

It could be so many things, but naturally our minds immediately think of the C word.

If it is any consolation to you I had similar symptoms, blood (dark) in stool, rapid weight loss, exhaustion, the works. Naturally I prepped myself for bad news.

I think I had every scan, ultrasound, endoscopy, colonoscopy and bloods that they could think of, the hospital consultants and staff were brilliant.

Turned out I had Helicobacter Pylori which resulted in a microscopic bleed in the stomach from a perforated ulcer. That had been going on for a long time asymptomatically. So the black stools were the result of the upper GI bleed. Sorted with Nexium type drug. I had big polyps on the bowel too, which were removed via colonoscopy. Got a blood transfusion as the internal bleeding caused iron deficiency anaemia.

Touch wood I'm fine now. Check up once a year for stomach, and three years for bowel. It is not always bad news, but I had myself in knots of worry, it is natural.

I hope everything turns out ok for your relative. All the best.

DH's first signs were bone crushing tiredness, rapid weight loss, a change in stools then rapid onset, painless jaundice. His CA19-9 was through the roof as were his bilirubin levels. I hope the scan went well. DH was told it was most likely pancreatic cancer by the consultant before he even had a scan.
