Waking with a headache every morning

jazzyoldjim · 18/04/2022 21:07

For the past 2 weeks I've been waking up every morning with a headache. It feels a bit like a sinus/face headache but can also be thumping in the top of my head. It lasts from when I wake at 7 til around midday.

I feel excessively sleepy all day, but I do have a 4yo and a 5 month old baby, both kids are good sleepers and do 7-7 with one night feed for baby every other night (my husband does 50/50 of the night feeds) the weird thing is, I feel worse when I haven't had to get up. On nights where i get up at 3am and feed baby I actually don't have the headache.

Any thoughts?

Could be anything op and likely nothing dodgy. However brain tumours can present with morning head ache/nausea, so best to get check out to rule that out.

LizzieSiddal · 18/04/2022 21:09

The simplest explanation would be dehydration. Are you drinking enough/bedroom too hot?

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 18/04/2022 21:10

I am v headaches and always have a headache but realised my neck was in a bad position efficient was causing the headache.

I bought an (expensive) Tempur neck support pillow and it's made the world of difference. If I don't use it I wake really sore.

Would explain why you're worse on your non waking nights too

NotwatchingSpooks · 18/04/2022 21:13

Do you have carbon monoxide detectors, I would put one in your bedroom, just to rule that out

allthecrackers · 18/04/2022 21:18

Please get a health mot by your GP it could be heart/blood pressure related and a warning sign.

Rodion · 18/04/2022 21:19

Teeth clenching while you sleep? That can cause dreadful headaches.

EyeSpyPlumPie · 18/04/2022 21:20

Do you grind your teeth? I do occasionally and wake up with a headache if I’ve been doing it in my sleep. But definitely get it checked out.

jazzyoldjim · 18/04/2022 21:20

@NotwatchingSpooks Yes we have monitors, I am paranoid about that.

@LizzieSiddal Always drink plenty and sleep with windows open.

I'm kind of reluctant to go to the GP as I have always been a sleepy person and they never find any reason. The headaches are new tho.

Teeth grinding is definitely a possibility. Is that a dentist job?

OP posts:
GCAcademic · 18/04/2022 21:21

Could be sleep apnea.

jazzyoldjim · 18/04/2022 21:26

@allthecrackers I actually had a ECG ultrasound when I was pregnant as my heart was sounding weird. They didn't find anything though.

If you have a feel inside your mouth around your tmj's behind your molars and they are tender, I was told that is caused by teeth grinding, a dentist can prescribe a mouth guard

tmj: temperal mandibular joint

fizzyfood · 18/04/2022 21:29

My daughter kept waking up with headaches and a trip to the optician showed the pressure was raised behind her eyes and she had to have a lumbar puncture to reduce the pressure so I'd advise a trip to the optician.

SpeedofaSloth · 18/04/2022 21:30

Are your pillows comfy?

tinselvestsparklepants · 18/04/2022 21:32

Could you be grinding your teeth in your sleep? I do and it does result in headaches.

jazzyoldjim · 18/04/2022 21:33

@aceyace Thanks for that! No tenderness tho

OP posts:
jazzyoldjim · 18/04/2022 21:35

@SpeedofaSloth Yes I think so! I sleep with two duck feather pillows and I feel like I sleep soundly, my husband jokes that it takes me approx 1min to fall asleep at night.

I grind my teeth at night, think it's called bruxism. Dentist has made me a kind of gum shield teeth guard which helps. If I have a really bad night of grinding, I suffer from headaches just like you've described. Suggest a trip to dentist - they'll be able to tell by looking at your teeth if you're a grinder or not. The guard helps.

AnnaMagnani · 18/04/2022 21:48

Just because you have 2 pillows and sleep soundly doesn't mean your neck isn't in the wrong place.

I am a veteran headache person and as well as migraine I have:
teeth grinding

headache from poor posture - shoulder hunching and pillows too high. Never noticed a neck pain until I had tennis elbow in both arms - physio pointed out I couldn't move my neck and whole problem came to light

and currently sinus pain from hayfever, which feels almost exactly like a migraine except my eyes are watering

Thighdentitycrisis · 18/04/2022 21:49

I grind my teeth have ground my incisors flat (and have high blood pressure) . I bought a guard from Amazon that you heat up and mould to your teeth. Lots cheaper than the dentist one.
What really helped me was acupuncture

Tiredness and headache are two of the latest symptoms listed for omicron.

Heartofglass12345 · 18/04/2022 23:28

Tiredness and headaches could be a sign of sleep apnoea, do you wake frequently during the night for the loo? Do you snore?

Mimijamroll · 19/04/2022 09:09

Hay-fever? Some people find they just get headaches with hay-fever.

jazzyoldjim · 19/04/2022 19:43

@CorsicaDreaming Negative! testing every few days, still not had covid yet.

@Heartofglass12345 I decided to record my sleep using a sleep app last night. There is a recording every 15/30 mins of very loud snoring. I had no idea I snored! DH says he notices it sometimes but not much!
I find if I wake up then I need to go to the loo, but needing the loo doesn't wake me up.
