2yo DD2 has just developed ezcema, any advice or hints?

DD2 had chicken pox in November and since then has developed ezcema mainly on and near her knees, back and tummy. Also she has patches of dry skin on her scalp mainly where the chicken pox spots were.

I have tried E45, normal aqueous cream and 1% hydrocortisone.

Haven't changed anything she uses since she was born, we use Halo and Horns bath wash (3 squirts in a bath) and H&H shampoo.

Went to GP today but he was a bit useless he gave her hydrocortisone ointment, Oilatum plus for the bath and Doublebase gel as well as POlytar shampoo for her scalp.

Seems a bit excessive to me, he says the chicken pox is coincidence but I think it's odd she has suddenly developed ezcema after nearly 2 years.

my dd 16 months has just developed ezcema, at the same time as coming down with a bug, and also going through a bad teething spell.

our doctor said that although she's never had ezcema before it may have occured because she's rundown and her body is under more stress than usual. hopefully it won't happen again...

thanks moodle that would make sense if she has just had chicken pox her immune system would be all over the place, I don't think it's a coincidence as the really bad patches are in the places that had the most spots and she was scratching the most.

oh. i don't know. i hope it goes away soon. maybe she's a bit rundown? i hope she feels better soon.

sweetkitty · 10/01/2008 21:34

If she's rundown it's not showing anywhere else, she's a complete livewire. Have been using the Double base stuff today and the bath stuff (DD1 complaining about lack of bubbles) but it always seems to flare up once she's in the bath.

Is that what ezcema's like? Even in plain water the minute she's wet her whole back is red.

Have to get the hydrocortisone tomorrow as they ran out at the chemists. It's such a faff though putting on creams 5 times a day although she's a little star.

Eczema can always be worse when immune system has a break down. DD1 is constantly covered in patches unfortunately. It is possible to just develop it as their systems go through a lot of changes at this age plus the chicken pox will have worn her down physically.

sorry just reread another post it may be also where she was scratching spots she has aggrivated the skin so using the creams wont hurt but just see how she is after a few days.

sweetkitty · 10/01/2008 21:42

Thanks Nemo it just seemed strange to me that it started the minute the chicken pox spots left her, wee soul still thinks I'm putting cream on her spots.

Hi sweetkitty, my 20 month old dd has had eczema since she was 2 months old. When she is in the bath, even with practically cold water, the patches of eczema look very red. She always looks a lot worse for a couple of hours after her bath.

suiledonn · 10/01/2008 21:44

Also forgot to say if you live in a hard water area plain water can be very hard on the skin.

DS developed eczema when he was about 2.4, his just suddenly appeared when the weather changed from summer to autumn. The GP prescribed oilatum, acqueous cream, a parafin based emoillient (sp?) and a steroid cream.

After recommendations on here I started using this in the bath/shower and the intense relief overnight cream (used morning and night). There is also an Aveeno Overnight Anti-Itch cream which helps to stop him from scratching, but I have to order it from the USA, and the intense relief cream is almost as good. I also changed his washing powder to Filetti. Also keeping his nails very short, and filing the edges so that they're rounded, makes a big difference.

I think you will probably try a few different things before you find the combination of washes/creams that will work best for your dd. After we started using Aveeno ds improved so much that we hardly ever use the steroid cream now. Occasionally he will have a bad outbreak and we will apply steroid cream 3 or 4 times over a couple of days, but that only happens every 2 or 3 months.

I hope she's feeling better soon.

Thanks for this will definitely add the website to my favourites if this first course of treatments the GP gives doens't work.

We're in Scotland so soft water.

I've never come across ezcema myself so didn't know that the water can make it look so red.

I only bath her about 3-4 times a week unless she needs it as I think daily baths can strip the skin and they aren't smellya t that age.

I have eczema, it is always worse when I am run down and stressed in any way, the creams sometimes make me cry when I put them on because they sting so much - but they do work which is why I carry on.

Steroid creams are less damaging than they used to be when I was a child (it is the creams that have changed not just having adult skin)

Any water is awful for my skin I have some oilatum stuff that I put on before I get into the bath that I use as a soap substitute.

For some people it helps to have a bag of oats in a muslin bag hanging in the running bathwater oats have some very soothing properties.

Most children grow out of eczema as they get older - I hope this is the case for your little one
