What’s this on DD’s toe? (pic)

DD (13) has developed this hard knobbly lump by her big toe. It’s a bit like a bunion, but it’s not on the side of her foot, and google seems to say bunions are always on the side.

It’s not filled with liquid/pus; it’s hard like bone, but you can wiggle it about a bit. She says it doesn’t really hurt but can be slightly sore sometimes.

Any idea what it is? Any reason to see the GP if it’s not bothering her too much?

a ganglion?

Get her to a GP, I wouldn’t be happy that wasn’t a cyst if albeit benign!

DrDetriment · 17/04/2022 18:59

Go to a podiatrist. Could be many things but could be something simply that will get worse. Like hallux rigidus.

Wigeon · 17/04/2022 19:17

Hm, I don’t think it’s a ganglion because it doesn’t feel like it’s fluid. Unless maybe it’s really filled and therefore feels quite hard?

Not sure if the GP would just think we were wasting their time if it’s not painful. But then again I don’t want to wait until it’s causing a problem, especially as she’s still a growing child.

From a quick google, hallux rigidus sounds bad/ painful, although is that something adults rather than children get?

I don’t think that’s wasting a GP’s time. I know it’s not really causing a problem but it’s clearly something out of the range of normal.

Get it checked. As pp have said you could check with a podiatrist or chiropodist first if you can afford it, but I think you’ll end up at the GP anyways. All lumps and bumps should be checked.

Apandemicyousay · 17/04/2022 19:24

All lumps, especially unusual ones, warrant a diagnosis just to confirm all benign . Suggest take to GP, that really isn’t wasting anyone’s time.

Wigeon · 17/04/2022 19:35

Have now prodded it a bit more and reckon it could be fluid filled, so maybe a ganglion cyst after all. But does sound like it might be worth getting a GP to have a look. My surgery doesn’t seem to do e-consults so can’t just send over a pic, but could call next week.

Any lumps like this need seen by a doctor

Update for anyone interested - I was on the point of booking a GP appointment but the knobble seems to have shrunk right down (DD said she kept fiddling with it), so I think it’s probably ok. One of those weird things about bodies! I’m sure she’ll tell me if it grows again / starts to hurt and we can think about getting it checked out if so.
