Is a serum potassium level of 5.4 on a blood test anything to be worried about?

It may depend on other factors, who it is, why it was tested, if they have any illnesses or are on medication.

I had a blood test to check my cholesterol and it is in red with “further action needed” by the side of it but my doctor hasn’t flagged it up with me.

Potassium is fairly regularly falsely high on blood tests. It happens if cells in the sample rupture during or after collection, meaning they leak potassium and give a false elevated reading. I imagine your gp will order a repeat sample to check that this was the case.

That’s just it when I phoned up to get the results the receptionist said all ok. I have some symptoms that I thought were menopausal but now thinking they may be kidney related? Frequent urinating at night, smelly urine and tiredness.

If you are concerned then speak to your doctor, either by phone or in person, its not the reception responsibility to interpret blood results. Have you been asked to give a urine sample to check for a uti and dehydration.,

No, not particularly concerning (esp in conte t of other normal results) but if I was your GP I’d probably repeat the sample in the first instance.

No, no urine sample, nothing. I think I will try and speak to GP.
