Most of the spots have scabbed and he doesn't seem too distressed by them being itchy, but he is incredibly upset , looks like he is in pain, The last 2 nights have been horrendous, is this normal?

Yes - it is pretty normal. DD had it terribly last Easter and she was inconsolable at night

I found giving her a long bath with some Aveeno helped before bed. Apparently you can use oats wrapped in muslin but I'm far too lazy for that. I just smothered her in Aveeno and let her sit in the bath for a while which eased the itching considerably. Then I rubbed her down with calamine aqueous and put a little Eurax on the really bad bits. I discovered Piriton syrup about half-way through which was a god-send.

do you have any of this stuff? I'd say the Piriton is a must really. DD had some in "unreachable" places like her mouth which we couldn't treat with cream and which bothered her the most.

Hope he feels better soon

I'd say it was about two weeks before she was "back to normal" but definitely the first 5 to 7 days were the worst. It'll all be a distant memory soon, don't worry and then you can sit back smug in the knowledge that you've done it while other mums quake at the words "chicken" and "pox"
