Tingling on left leg for almost a year

Just sharing this on hear to see if there's anyone there at all who may have had or has a similar issue. For context I'm 35 with no underlying health issue and not on any meds. I also haven't had any trauma or accident at all. I've been experiencing tingling on my left leg for almost a year (on and off but it has intensified in the past few weeks). The affected area is mostly the knee down although sometimes I feel a prickling and electricity like shocks on my upper left leg. I now also feel a very slightly nerve-y feeling on my left cheekbone and top of my left head but not as frequent as the leg feeling. I've had numerous telephone appts with my gp over the year. I've been put on various medications as initially they thought it's a migraine despite the absence of any pain or vision issues etc. I've also been referred to physio and had 4 sessions but physio said she can't find anything physio related so referred me back to GP. I had a CT scan last year which was normal, I went to a chiropractor who can't find an issue. I had a blood test last year but only testing for a small number of things and that showed normal sugar, b12 and thyroid. I'm at my wits ends and it's affecting me so much as it's always there and it worries me. Spoke to GP again this morning and now going to have a full blood test tomorrow and been asked to book a face to face appt to physically check my leg. :(

Any number of things, including Multiple Sclerosis. I'd ask for an MRI.

bunfighters · 12/04/2022 16:39

I have something very similar. Numerous neuro apts over many years, MRIs etc. and still no firm diagnosis but lots of things ruled out. You should get a referral and ask for an MRI though in case it picks anything up. Mine got worse after the Covid vaccines so I am guessing there is an inflammatory process going in my case.

Roselilly36 · 12/04/2022 16:41

Don’t panic, but yes those symptoms need checking out, could be any number of things, GP will perform a basic neuro exam I expect and if GP thinks it’s appropriate, referral to Neurologist. Good luck, try not to worry, so many thing it could be, many of which aren’t serious. Stressing yourself out won’t help, keep of Google too. Good luck.

I have this on my left calve for the past year, went to the doctor but he didn't seem concerned. I've some patches where hair doesn't grow anymore too, I used to scratch my legs a lot when I was younger and wondered if I damaged my nerves.

moggerhanger · 12/04/2022 16:45

That says possible sciatic nerve impingement to me (potentially a herniated lumbar disc). Maybe another MRI?

veggiemonster · 12/04/2022 16:59

I also have this and it was because of low vitamin D.
Mine also got worse after covid vaccines (not anti vax just an observation)

Were you experiencing tingling on just one leg too? Did your issue get fixed?

How are you doing now? Are you still experiencing the tingling?

I had this and it was low magnesium, disappeared almost as soon as I started taking it. I'd give it a go then if it doesn't work push for further tests.

Plumspears · 12/04/2022 17:08

I've had similar for about a year too. It also got worse after COVID vaccine and I have been told it's an inflammatory thing. But it can have various courses. I'd push for a neurology referral and MRI.

Plumspears · 12/04/2022 17:09

Causes not courses

Dancingalong · 12/04/2022 17:12

Have your folate levels been checked? I get it in my left thigh and it always gets worse when my folate levels are low. I keep putting mine down to that although I really should probably speak to the Doctor about it.

Lipsandlashes · 12/04/2022 17:17

I don’t want to scare you but you need to push for an MRI. My husband had very similar starting in his leg. He was diagnosed quite quickly with Multiple Sclerosis. He was 40 when he was diagnosed. On the plus side he recovered fully from the first attack and has not had another since. It’s now been 2 years. He’s got a brilliant consultant and is on preventative medication.

gogohm · 12/04/2022 17:40

Ask for an mri, unfortunately that's how ms can start

bunfighters · 12/04/2022 18:11

I have had it for around 30 years actually, it has been only very slowly progressive (one thigh, then both, then a patch on my face, all sensory) so MS has been considered but it doesn't look like it (exhaustive investigations) as clear MRIs. It looks like it could be some kind of autoimmune small fiber neuropathy - which would make sense with the issues post vaccines (interesting that a few people have posted this). I had a very bad year last year but am much better now.

Ask your GP for a referral as apparently the waiting lists are very long and you do need to rule out a few things. However, there are an enormous number of people with odd neurological symptoms who never get diagnosed with anything specific (according to my last neuro).

SB1990 · 20/01/2023 05:07

@Kittley did you ever get answers x

Kittley · 24/03/2023 05:59

Hi no i haven't :(. It never went away but I kind of got used to having it on and off however it has come back strong for the past two weeks now where it never stops so I need to see my GP again. Still no explanation for this. I went to see a Neurologist last year and had an MRI of my brain and back as well as nerve conduction studies however the Neurologist said there's nothing linked to Neurology he can find.

I had similar but both sides and hands. Had MRI, nerve conduction study as well as blood tests etc but no cause was found. In the end they just called it idiopathic. It did actually eventually mainly resolve and now I only get it occasionally.

I'm glad to hear that you don't get it as often :( it really sucks doesn't it. How long did you have it for before you only got it occasionally? I've been having it for almost two years now.
