DS 17 has bad acne - please share your top recommendations for products I can get him please. I've suggested going to the Dr but apparently I'm being ridiculous! Hmm

Definitely go to the GP. Roaccutane changed mine and both my brothers life amazingly but the GP had so many other things to offer before that too.

In terms of products cetaphil (cheaper) and la Roche posay (expensive) both recommended to me by the dermatologist. Only buy products that say non comedogenic on them as that means non spot forming.

Over the counter - Cerave oily skin face wash and Acnecide cream (or any benzoyl peroxide cream). Avoid touching face.

GP entry level - Epiduo cream (mix of benzoyl peroxide and retinol, stronger than OTC). Topical antibiotics.

GP next level - oral antibiotics (I am not a fan due to gut health effects). Possibly Spironolactone.

Dermatologist - Roaccutane (scary side effects incl mental health/depression in some)

1st stop is the GP for an assessment. My son at 13 has gave, back and chest acne, some sore looking bits but chest and back is mainly closed skin coloured spots. GP was great he has been on Lymecycline for 8 months and uses Benzoly Proxide at night. He eases twice a day with salcylic acid ( he likes the deep clean range from Superdrug as Cerave stung his skin) and what a massive difference we have seen. He is significantly improved. If he gets a bit lazy with a salcylic acid face wash I can see his skin deteriorating.

If you can’t get him to go to gp the best I think you can buy is Acnicide ( benzoyl peroxide, but it does bleach clothes/bedding) and a salcylic acid face wash and soap bar, which is available in the Derp Clean range in Superdrug. It’s a good cheap starting point at about £4 and buy 1 get one half price.

Second GP, my dd 14 has just finished roaccutaine and her skin is so much better. The GP initially prescribed topical skincare and then anti biotics, when these didn't work she had a derm referral and started accutaine. The derms are concerned about the level of scarring. This service is standard for the NHS and is easily accessible if, your ds agrees.

Also, change pillowcase, towels, face cloth etc every couple of days. Also any pyjamas or t-shirt they sleep in. Bacteria & oils will build up very quickly on the fabric & make the issue worse. And they should use their own separate towel for drying their face, chest etc, no-one else should use it & they shouldn't use it for their legs, bum etc. Change this every couple of days as well.

I've had roaccutane in the past - the side effects can be severe but some people don't get any. Most people do get great results. I did but it's slowly come back (still quite mild though more than a decade later). Am using salicylic acid soap at present, only been on it a couple of weeks but it's looking promising.

My nearly 14 year old takes Lymecycline and his skin has more or less cleared up. He's been on it for about six months now, having the odd break for a few weeks.

Acnecide and Purifide is what my teenage sons use. I buy it on Amazon. Now they regularly use these, they are virtually spot free. I buy it from Amazon.

Drs. Or just leave him to it, it’s not your problem & he's taking the traditional male route of avoiding healthcare.

RagingWisteria · 30/05/2022 15:36

Definitely Differin Gel, it really helped with my son.

PersonaNonGarter · 30/05/2022 15:39

does he wash his face twice a day? Clean hair also essential.

try dr Dennis gross AHA face wash for pore perfecting. It is amazing.
