13 DD sick through the night for a week.

My 13 DD has been sick for over a week now. She’s fine but exhausted during the day. It’s after dinner she becomes slowly unwell and ends up violently sick through the night and with a very sore stomach. We took her to out of hours last Monday and she was sent to the childrens a&e who gave her ondansetron, some laxatives and sent her home saying she had gastritis. She was ok a couple of days and then it started again. We then took her to the GP who reluctantly prescribed bucastem (? An anti emetic) complained about the cost and sent her away saying take more laxatives. She was ok last night but again tonight has been violently ill. It always starts with her face flushing about 20-30 mins before she starts to vomit.

She’s never been constipated in her life and she’s not holding down food so I’m not surprised she has no poo in her. Regardless she takes the laxative.

The poor child is distraught. She already has a fear of being sick. When she’s sick she can’t even hold down water, she can drink it fine during the day.

I called nhs 24 and they said they don’t see a child for vomiting unless it’s been 24 hours without water but she’s holding down water during the daytime so she doesn’t meet their threshold. It’s certainly not a&e bad yet. I had to fight with the GP receptionist to be seen on Friday because “it’s only a bit of childhood vomiting” according to her with all her medical training. They didn’t offer any tests.

No one else in the house is sick. Im getting worried and the lack of sleep is started to get to me. Whereas my DD can sleep during the day I’m having to look after my youngest child so can’t. My partner is working hospital shifts so while helpful when here, he isn’t when he’s working or needing to sleep for work.

If anyone has any advice on how to deal with this, I’m all ears.

She was much much younger at the time but my dd had a similar thing that lasted for about a month sock early hours most days of during the day. Turnd out original bug had given her temporary lactose intolerance and also she was given antacids as she had had been quite reflux baby previously ( was about 6 at the time) my inheritance though at 13 would be migraine..

Why is she still taking the laxative?

Schlerp · 09/04/2022 22:46

Thanks @Clareyck - she is already dairy free due to allergy. I did wonder if reflux was playing a part in it as for the first few nights I gave her omeprazole for the pain (before the vomiting started) and she felt it helped a little. She can’t hold it down now anyway.

@LightSpeedsthe GP and hospital felt that the lack of pooing was constipation rather than vomiting everything up again.

What are you feeding her when she does eat? If any of mine vomit, we only introduce foods slowly. BRAT diet first and if that is held down, we progress to more normal foods. Banana, Rice (white), apple sauce, Toast (white). I would start off slowly with foods and stick to one thing at a time to see.

How is her mental health? DS had this the summer before he started secondary school and it was his onset of migraines, no head pain just night time vomiting, every night.

He wasn't aware he was anxious about starting secondary but once he did start it stopped.

He still gets mainly vomiting with migraines butt more like every 4-6 weeks rather than nightly.

Poor thing

Did they check her blood sugar levels? If she has the following symptoms you need to get her back to A&E asap:
Tired - more tired than normal
Thirsty - excessively thirsty
Thinner - weight loss
Toilet - needing to pee a lot.

The vomiting could (just possibly) be a symptom of diabetic ketoacidosis which needs immediate treatment. I hope it's not but if they haven't checked her blood sugars they really really should have.

My son had something very similar, Ok during the day then vomiting and in pain at night. Then the next night he would be ok but the following one the pain and vomiting would start again. I had the doctor out in the night who said it was gastrointestinal and to starve him for 24 hours. I did this but still the pain and sickness. Eventually I phoned the local children’s Aand E , they said it’s very rare but occasionally tape worm can have a similar effect. So they told me what to look for and I checked and sure enough that’s what it was. We all had to take one teaspoon of a prescribed medication and the problem was solved phew!! But for the couple of weeks it went on it was awful. He lost a stone in weight with all the starving and vomiting and I was convinced it was something really serious. We traced the source, turns out my husband’s friends puppies were a bit wormy.

Could it be a new allergy?
What is she eating in evening but not during the day?
It's the going red in the face prior to being sick that sounds like it could be a reaction to something.

Thanks everyone.
She’s not diabetic - no symptoms of that.

She’s not showing any signs of migraines but couldn’t rule it out completely. The pain seems to be less these past two days but still vomiting.

It could be an allergy but we’re not really sure to what. Dr asked her to keep a food and poo diary. I suggested it could be wheat and she got very upset (she’s autistic) as she doesn’t want to live without wheat based products (also very dramatic).

Prior to being sick she is coming up in a red rash, we noticed tonight it was on her arms and shoulders as well as face. This goes away about 20 mins after being sick and appears again just before she’s sick the next time. No fever

I’m wondering if she maybe has helicobacter as there’s lots of burping and a relative said this was how they discovered they had it.

I did wonder about worms but as she’s constipated we can’t see any poo. We have worming stuff in and once her stomach is
Settled enough I’ll get her to take it. My fear is she throws it up again if we give it too soon. No one else has any sign of worms.

Back to the doctor tomorrow again. This time
I’m going to fight for some kind of answer. Not being palmed off again.

Google autonomic dysregulation, pain is only a little part of migraine, DS rarely had a headache but has a runny nose/eye and is v sick, DSM presents with stroke symptoms (can't read/speak/weak) but again no pain

Good luck
