Loud crack when went over on ankle

So Sunday I was out walking the dog. Went over on a plate thing in the road. There was a very loud crack and instant pain that made me want to pass out or throw up.

Ankle is now bruised but not massively swollen. Wasn't able to weight bare initially but can pretty much walk about ok. Albeit with some discomfort.

The knuckle bit of my ankle is still very tender to the touch.

Our local hospitals are drowning under covid cases so am not wanting to go unnecessarily but insure if I should get it checked.

The noise was very definitely a crack as opposed to a pop.

Anyone know if its possible to have limited pain and be able to walk with a fractured bone? Just wondering if I ought to head everyone's nagging and get it checked.

Thanks folks

Called 111 ?not allowed to walk in at a&e without an appointment for not emergency) and they have said as I am not in any pain that it's likely just a sprain but to monitor and if the swelling gets worse (there isn't really any) or the pain becomes constant then to ring back and they will schedule a visit to a&e.

Thanks for the advice folks. Interesting to hear so many people have had similar.

Another here who walked on a broken ankle

2 surgeries and 13 years later it is still painful

Get it x-rayed asap

You can definitely weight bare with a broken ankle. I had chronic ongoing ankle pain for months which I put down to some sort of muscle issue. I was referred to an ankle specialist and the night before I saw him I ran 10k (in pain). I was put in plaster the following day as my fibula was shattered and had been shattered for months. 4 years on I think it’s still broken (waiting for another mri next week). It just won’t heal. I’m still walking on it.

achilkes

Could it be an Achilles’ tendon injury? You hear a loud crack with it.

jalopy · 07/04/2022 06:57

Might be a fibula fracture.

Ignore 111 and go to A&E. It should be quiet this time of day.
You could do more damage hobbling around on it.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/04/2022 07:32

Please get it checked.

Last time I hurt my ankle and thought “it’ll be fine”, I ended up in physio for 9 months at my own expense.
In that case it was badly sprained, but that ankle is weak from a late diagnosed and badly healed break when I was 12.

Broke my ankle last year after tumbling down a flight of 3 steps Hmm. Thought it was another sprain (I'm clumsy) took a taxi to hospital and straight after my x-ray the radiographer said I'd broken a bone. If I had continued to think it was a sprain the Nurse Practitioner said I might have caused much more damage.

I know the NHS is overloaded but in such circumstances it's always better to be safe than sorry.

It's unlikely a gp can diagnose if it's broken simply by look and touch. Even with an x ray a break isn't always obvious.

My mum went over in her ankle several years back. Walked in it for a week but it wasn't improving. Thought because she would weight bare it was fine and just badly bruised.

She'd broken it though and Her treatment (cast) ended up taking longer due to the pressure of walking on it rather than having it sorted straight away.

Dd also broke her foot just be going over in it - she was doing nothing more than rushing from one room to the other Inside the house. We left it a couple of days as it just looked bruised and sore but she could walk. Again, it was broken. That one didn't need a cast but did need not to be walked in and bandages for a bit.

A crack is either air, like when you crack your knuckles or a break, I had a spiral break to my fibula and could still bear weight. Ligaments make a pop btw.

Sleepeatrepeat · 07/04/2022 08:41

Thanks for everyone's input. It is interesting how many go undiagnosed.

Have spoken to 111 and my gp this morning (they are on the ball today) and both have advised that as I am not in pain and not hobbling about as in can walk relatively normally that it is likely a sprain or torn ligament. However I am to rest and monitor and any concerns they have said to just turn up at a&e.

Am going to see how I am later.

Ligament tears are far worse than breaks for pain!! So it's more likely you've broken it than have significant ligament damage. I don't understand why you wouldn't check. If it's not broken you have peace of mind. If it is broken, you've stopped doing further damage to it.
