Mixed bleach and vinegar - toxic? Fatal?

I've stupidly mixed a cup of bleach and a cup of apple cider vinegar in the washing machine (empty load to attempt to clean the machine). Yes stupid, don't need any mean comments or sarcasm. I'm 9 months pregnant and very worried and feeling stupid enough already.

After having mixed already I thought to google mixing these substances and to my horror found out this is how you create chlorine gas which is toxic / potentially fatal.

I rang 101, 999, 111, health and safety executive , local council , and was just passed around continuously. Was just told to keep windows open and stay away from room. Ended up being connected to fire service who advised to just put it on a rinse and spin twice - if I smell or see any fumes to call 999 again.

I've done so. But still so worried due to what I have read.

Anyone have experience or expertise in this???
Will the rinses and spins sort this? How do I recognise chlorine gas fumes? Just any advice or reassurance would be helpful.

I used w5 lidl bleach and apple cider vinegar.

I would just run a few rinse cycles. You would know if you were being gassed by chlorine gas, your eyes would be streaming and your chest would be tight, just think of how badly maintained swimming pools irritate your eyes.

I wouldn’t think that amount would create a lot of fumes at all, and would be washed away in the machine rinse and leaving the windows open to air the room. I’m not an expert but don’t think you should be too worried. Flowers - it’s stressful not knowing what to do in these situations. x

You'll be fine, promise. It will all be gone already. You'd know if you hadn't. Follow the advice given. You will chuckle at this one day, I promise.

Sorry. This made me laugh.

I would open all the windows and doors and do the rinse cycles as they say.

Same thing happens if you pee on bleach in the loo. Just run the wash a couple of times to dilute it and wash it through. It'll be fine, but frankly someone else can do the washing now if you're 9 months pregnant. This gives you a good reason to sit on the sofa instead.

Oh bless you, it’s fine

Celina94 · 05/04/2022 16:08

Thank you so much guys. To be honest I've laughed at myself a little bit since posting this too, I just know nothing about this kinda stuff so after reading the absolute worst stuff on google I guess panicked and overreacted a little but I feel much better now!!! Thank you thank you thank you.

Are you being serious? I really can't tell. What department did you ask for at the council?

Celina94 · 05/04/2022 16:10

@marqueses I was forwarded to them by health and safety executive, who i was forwarded to by 101. And yes, overreaction and probably silly - but very serious! 😄

Will try to get mumsnet to delete this thread now.

Don't get it deleted. I think it needs to be nominated for classics!
