Blood pressure increasing on tablets

Foody8410 · 03/04/2022 18:03

Hi I was diagnosed with high blood pressure 3 weeks ago, readings averaging 160/110. It's been like this for a while I think.
Doctor put me on 2.5mg ramipril to start with, it worked a little bring down to around 140/90. She upped my dose 3 days ago to 5mg ramipril. Now since then blood pressure has been back up 160/97 .... 155/93 159/99.
Is this coincidence or is something strange going on? I'm speaking to her tomorrow anyway as blood tests are showing reduced kidney function aswell. Anyone know what would be the next step?

They'll be monitoring you for a few weeks, I'd have thought. If the kidney function doesn't come back to normal they might have to change medication (is your eGFR below 90 mL/min/1.73m^2?). If it does but your blood pressure still isn't adequately controlled, the next step would be to add a calcium channel blocker (probably amlodipine) to the ACE inhibitor (ramipril). I'm assuming you're white/Asian and under 55.

Do you take the ramipril at bedtime?

purpleme12 · 03/04/2022 22:18

I was started on ramipril (my kidney reduced function as well)
While they were bringing mine down it wasn't enough
They increased he dosage... Still not enough
They put me on another one as well as the ramipril
They might have even increased the dosage of that as well I'm not sure
But I was then referred to endocrinologist at hospital (although just e-referral) who said to keep the ramipril but changed the other medicine to another one
I think that then got increased again but after this they were happy with me

Although my blood pressure was as lot higher than yours so hopefully yours will be quicker to fix lol

Foody8410 · 03/04/2022 23:01

My egfr is 60 and has been since before I even started the tablets Confused

It took a few months for them to get my medicine sorted so I wouldn't worry
Early days yet

LazyYogi · 03/04/2022 23:32

Normal eGFR is classed as 60-100 if I remember correctly. The average is 90-100 I think but some people are naturally lower.
Your blood pressure could be caused by a number of factors so might take a while to find the right medication to act on the cause.

Mamabear12 · 04/04/2022 11:14

You can also lower BP with diet. The doctors do not seem to mention this, but a whole foods plant based diet can lower it effectlively....so much so you need to monitor when starting it as most people reduce and stop their BP meds when doing it. It is esp good if you are over weight, bc the only problem on this diet is losing weight (for me) bc I am slim to begin with.

LazyYogi · 04/04/2022 11:43

It really depends on the cause mamabear12 diet isn't going to reverse my kidney disease which creates my high BP...

Foody8410 · 04/04/2022 14:02

@LazyYogi how would I find out which has started first.
I believe I'm in stage 2 kidney disease for at least 12 months.
My blood pressure and pulse has always ran high all of my life when I was slim and now when I'm fat. I don't know which one is causing the other.
I believe my high blood pressure is heredity as my mum and nan have both had to take life long medication

Some labs only report egfr as over 60 or if under 60 report the actual number. So where I work we don't know about stage one or two just 3

Grammarmum · 04/04/2022 14:33

Am not sure if you are checking own BP.If so don't check too often because that will effect your reading Best of three every two to three days Thinking nice relaxing thoughts .White coat syndrome really is a thing !

LazyYogi · 04/04/2022 16:48

Have you had a scan of your kidneys? My condition is hereditary also and my mum and gran both had it. So in my case a scan showed enough for diagnosis.

I don't really know how you find out the best medication for you (what is making your BP high). In my case calcium channel blockers do the best job but I have to take beta blockers instead at the moment due to pregnancy.

Basically I would push for further investigation rather than just treating the high BP alone as it could be related to something else especially if you have family history and kidney function issues.

purpleme12 · 04/04/2022 17:19

@Foody8410 have you discussed these concerns with your doctor?

Foody8410 · 04/04/2022 18:37

Will do, thank you. Waiting for her to call me regarding latest bloods so will discuss then
