Does anyone else have to have a nap?

I get up at 5.30am and get home from work at 4.30pm. I’m so exhausted that I struggle to keep my eyes open on the train home. I then get home and within 1 hour I’m asleep on the sofa. I don’t even realise I’m about to fall asleep it’s so quick. I’m so tired that I’m being really lazy and I don’t have any energy to devote to anything else. I go to bed by 9pm latest. Im 31 years old, I have been tested and my vitamin levels are all fine. They used to be very low but I’ve been taking supplements for a couple of years now, I also get b12 injections every 3 months. Is this normal? I suppose my job is quite hard, I’m on my feet all day.

I used to before having kids. But I would come home, have dinner then a nap of about 30 minutes and stay up to about 11 or half 11. I'm 37 now with two kids and rarely have time to nap anymore.

I am a napper! Even before kids I had an afternoon nap. I feel constantly tired, though my levels are all meant to be ok, winter I'm at my worst!

I've come home from work and had a 20 nap on the sofa whilst dp cooks but on my days off I can have an hour or so and still need to go to bed early. Last few weeks I've been going to be just after 8pm, I get up at 6.30 so getting plenty of sleep but still so tired!

No advice, I'd love to be a person who could manage on 6 hours a night.

5.30am is an early start, maybe it just doesn't suit your body clock, I'm about your age and i find it really difficult to nap unless I'm utterly exhausted (new born stage, up all night in A&E or something similar), even though i know my body would benefit from a nap it just won't nap!

Did your blood test check your thyroid function?
I really need to nap when my thyroid is misbehaving. Last year I was having a nap every evening after dinner, I was utterly exhausted. Also no libido, cold and grumpy. I upped my thyroid meds (despite blood test saying TSH was fine and GP claiming it could not be that) and within a month I was fine again. Sleep 6/7 hours a night during the week and 8/9 weekends. Only nap occasionally now when I've got PMS and not sleeping as well.

I do on the weekend. I'm a teacher and absolutely shattered plus I had ME a few years ago so I still have to pace myself.

@RagzRebooted actually I have been experiencing shivering and coldness sometimes even when the heating is on full blast. My poor husband was so hot earlier and I felt like ice. I’ve previously had something checked called TSH I think. Would that be a sufficient test?

Yes ... ideally I like a nap every day. 5.30am is a really early wake up...I'd seriously struggle

Usually, yes. That's what they check with me. Normal range is quite large though (0.26-4) and I have gone from 2.2 last year when I felt rubbish to 0.67 now and feel fine. So for me, the upper half of normal is too high. I can check my blood results on my NHS app.

Yes, I get about 6 - 6.5 hours sleep and it never feels like enough, so 15 minutes mid-afternoon or when I get in from work makes all the difference between me being zombie-like all evening! I work in a culture where napping is normal and many of us feel that it's a healthy thing to do.

ImInStealthMode · 29/03/2022 19:18

I'm a napper. Not on a weekday as I'm in bed by 11pm latest and my alarm doesn't go off until 7.30am (no kids), but on a weekend I can't do a late night without a power nap in the afternoon.

I think your body gets used to certain patterns. The more sleep you have, the more you need. The less you have, the more you become capable of managing on less.

peachgreen · 29/03/2022 19:24

Please ask for your heart to be checked. Poor circulation (causing feeling cold) and falling asleep randomly were DH's only symptoms. It's probably not that but it's always worth getting it checked.

Wanting a nap and falling asleep when you're not even trying to aren't the same thing.

Keladrythesaviour · 29/03/2022 22:34

I've got ME so doesn't really count but I've always napped. Particularly after lunch if I can 2-3 is a real lull in my day. Work makes that tough but whenever I can I have an early afternoon snooze.
I definitely be napping with a 5.30am start! I used to sleep 4.30-6pm after school as a teenager.

Claymorekick · 29/03/2022 22:39

Me! I have no health issues that I am aware of but have always been a napper! My mum says I used to come home from primary school and nap and then would do the same at secondary school.

I can get through a working day without needing to nap (although when WFH, the temptation is strong Grin) but at weekends/days off, I always go to bed for an hour or so in the afternoon.

My teen DC think I am odd as they don't nap but they have grown up with it so just accept that is what I do.
