DD - aged 9 - with persistant diarrhoea - any ideas?

DD aged 9 developed diarrhoea bug at end of October. Had diarrhoea on and off throughout November and on 10 December became ill with sickness and collapsed. Got rushed into hospital. Tried to intravenously help her - unable to get a vein due to being too sunk - kept in and fed with glucose drink and sent home.

Put on buscopan tablets for IBS (by hospital) - didn't help so went back to my GP who has put her on meberverine tablets - which are for IBS too.

Have also cut out dairy from her diet since middle of December.

Has managed to go through from middle of December through to this last weekend feeling absolutely fine - still on tablets and still on dairy free (lactose) diet. Has had tummy pain (around belly button area) since October, which has never gone away, but I'm told that is normal with IBS - muscle pain but should eventually go.

Yesterday she had a nasty bout of diarrhoea again. Gave her diarolyte and kids diarrhoea mixture - kaolin. She didn't want to eat and felt very lethargic yesterday. Perked up last night so had some toast and all ok.

She's been to the toilet three times in the space of an hour first thing this morning. Has had semi-diarrhoea.

Took her to see a GP (not mine) who has suggested she stay on the IBS tablets and to do another stool sample to be tested for salmonella amongst other things (have already done one whilst in hosp and ok) and to do a blood test for FBC including coealic (sp?) disease.

I asked the GP if all this comes back ok and she still continues to have diarrhoea what would be our next step - he didn't know! I really had to push him for answers today. I got so cross I could feel myself simply giving up and walking out.

Anyone else had a similar problem with their child?

She also has a blocked left ear - she has grommets and the ear is blocked with wax. I've been putting drops in since Friday and it is now only just beginning to get better and become clearer. The GP didn't want to know about that either today.

One very frustrated but worried Mum.

maybe she has developed a lactose intolerance thing due to the nasty bug she had? long shot but thought id mention it anyway

Yes loupylou - the hospital consultant we had when she went into hosp just before Xmas said it is very likely she has developed a lactose intolerance due to the very nasty bug she picked up in October - I'd never have given dairy a thought during November/early December so I immediately took it out of her diet. I've had a child with the intolerance from a baby through till she was 2yrs old but never a child developing it after being ill. So you could say I 'fed' her problem by giving her dairy for those few weeks Nov/Dec. However, she's not had dairy (bread, yoghurt, cheese, chocolate, cakes, biscuits) since last month and all was ok until this weekend.

I just can't work out where I'm going wrong. She's perked right up this afternoon so hopefully I'll get her back into school tomorrow - she's missed so much school since Oct half-term - she's yet to do a full week. I'm going to get her blood test done first thing tomorrow too.

Has anyone else had a problem with persistant diarrhoea with their kids? Not a nice subject, I know, but I'd be glad of any advice! Thanks!

...and thanks again Loopylou x
