blinking ds?

ds keeps going through phases where he blinks a lot, been like this since he was a baby (now 3) and also seems light-sensitive. I have taken him to doc before but unfortnatley ended up seeing rather unhelpful locum who just automatically started writing him a prescription for antibiotics after v short examination of ds's eyes. we do have cats so wonder if he's picked anything up from them, or maybe needs glasses?
anyone else have similar problem, any advice? TIA.

Zola, I was just about to post exactly the same thing!

Ds is 16 months and has been blinking a lot (especially when watching tv ). Since everyone in my family wears glasses I think some form of eye prob is inevitable but was hoping it wouldn't come on this soon.

Will watch thread with interest...Sorry I can't offer advice except to say maybe just take him to opticians again?

Thanks Moomina - could be eyesight-related problem I guess, though locum said not to worry, have to take him again i think. hope your ds is okay too.

A lot of kids go through that stage and that's all it is. however, it is certainly possible to do an exam for glasses on a 3 year old and I advise parents to do so at least by 3 /2 or 4 just to rule out amblyopia (lazy eye.

its possible to do eye checks on a baby too. mieows dd had glasses y about 6months i think.

Yep, examining that age group can be challenging. Any younger and I refer to a pediatric ophthalmologist. Check around to see who is known to be good with children. In my experience, it works best to stay cheerful and go as quickly as possible to get the exam done before the patient loses interest. I also will note that the child came in for blinking, but will not dwell on it during exam because, again, it is usually a stage and nothing more.

this is quite common i think my ds1 started tis about 4 his teacher also mentioned it as eye sight probs run in my family i immediatly got his eyes checked they did not find anything. He did this for quite a long time but eventually stopped ,maybe it was just ahabit hes 12 now and his eyes are fine, but wouldnt do any harm to have him checked out even just for your own piece of mind as nellie has said .hope this helps

my DD has woren glasses since she was 5 months old. My ds was 4rs when he got his glasses. You could ask for a referral to the hospital eye clinic where there will be a special child doctor, or you could just take him to the opticians. Ask your HV to referral you to the hospital if you want to go down that route.

thanks, I'll see how he goes then, whether a nervous stage or in need of glasses. unfortunately haven't even seen hvs yet-moved a while ago and when i registered was told to wait for their call. probably about time i chased them up for his check-up.
