Yes - DD had an enormous one along her back when she was born which only really faded last year (she's now 3). There have been threads on it here in the "multicultural families" section I think. why do you ask? (I'm off to bed in a mo just in case you post a reply straight away!)

yes dd3 has one, just at the base of her spine above her bottom. it looks like a permamnt bruise. its noted in her red book, just in case people think that i have bruised her.

Cashncarry · 07/01/2008 00:26

Yup - totally normal I think! DD was past 2 when hers eventually faded although i don't know if the nightly massage with aqueous cream has anything to do with it - worth a try I suppose!

thanks put my mind at rest whilst just laying here with blocked sinuses god it hurts why is it you get things that cause you pain when there is no chemist open!

DD has a few on her lower back and a little one on the side of her face. They look like bruises and I recall a doctor telling a trainee doctor upon examinining my DD that in the past they used to think the children were being abused. I got my GP to document them in her file so it was all there.

DD is 4 and they are not showing any signs of fading. Never really notice them. Hmm, might start massaging them.

pukkapatch · 07/01/2008 00:32

yes, in fact it was a revelation to me that not all chidlren had them. growing up, every single baby i knew of, had them. but i'm asian

Cashncarry · 07/01/2008 00:33

Oh poor you with blocked sinuses (or is it sinusi??) Try steaming with some olbas oil and a towel over your head - it should give you some temporary relief until you can get to the docs tomorrow

Misdee · 07/01/2008 00:34

pukka, i hadnt really thought my dd would have them, we are white, i oftwen say dh is so pale-skinned he glows i nthe dark. when the Gp spotted it at her 6week check i was like 'oh whats that then'

verylittlecarrot · 07/01/2008 00:39

Yes - my dd is pale skinned and looks quite caucasian but is in fact mixed race, and has a very obvious mongolian spot above her bot. I must make sure it gets put on her notes at some point, as I know they are sometimes mistaken for bruises - especially in pale skinned children as they are rarely found in caucasian babies.

mehdismummy · 07/01/2008 00:40

have no oil to steam with! Gonna get some sudafed tomorrow. Birth spot amazed me coz i never seen any before he gets them from dh whos algerian

x posts with misdee - apologies if I just appeared to contradict you!!!

MarsLady · 07/01/2008 00:44

yes a fair few of us. They do look like bruises. You should get your HV to record it in his red book.

Misdee · 07/01/2008 00:45

thats ok VLC, i think it was confirmed on here at the time that caucasian children rarely have them. it was certainly a first for me

MarsLady · 07/01/2008 00:46

You don't need to do anything. It will eventually fade. My DC had them til they were about 5 (though the DTs seem not to have them anymore and they're almost 4 now.)

Sazisi · 07/01/2008 01:02

My DDs 2&3 both have them; we are caucasian, but my mother is quite olive-skinned and has some Russian blood; my Russian friend told me they are quite common in Russia so I'm assuming that's where we got them!
I was quite surprised when DD2 was born with them (she has one large bruisish-looking spot, and a smaller, darker spot a bit like a beauty spot) - I was already aware of them and knew what they looked like because my (part Afro-Caribbean) nephew had one, but had been told they were 'mixed-race spots'. I suppose we are all mixed-race if you go back far enough.
