The No Diet Diet -- free in the Independent this week -- anyone care to join me?

I didn't want to put this in weight loss as reading the introduction made me realise that it is a lifestyle change (yadda, yadda), and it sounds actaully quite sensible and interesting. Anyone else seen it or interested?

what is it about?

purpleduck · 07/01/2008 22:09

oooh ooooh oooh I heard a bit about it today , but I need more info. Sounds interesting!
Any link or anything?

oregonianabroad · 08/01/2008 12:15

It's really interesting. The basic premise is that you will never loose weight by obsessing about food, calories, fat grams, etc... but by a fullscale overhaul in your habits (so far, so obvious). According to the authors, research supports this, and suggests that people who are 'naturally' thin are more flexible in general. Therefore, the key to permanent, healthy weight loss is to change habits. The interesting bit for me is that they do not start anywhere near traditional food/exercise habits. each day you have a task of trying something new for example, yesterday was to cut out TV or radio, which instead i cut out mn in the evening since it is indeed more of a habit than TV. Instead of procrastinating, i actually got one of my coursework assignments done! For today, there is a choice of new things to try if you want, i'll post a list later, just need to check if there is a link first so i don't waste precious typing...

This is the website,

and here you can order the booklets that you have missed, with part of the profits going to charity,

or, here you can order the book from Amazon.

OK, Step 2 is

write something for fifteen minutes

also, for this week, there is a choice -- you are to choose at least 2 from the following list (pick something that you wouldn't ordinarily do):

-buy/read a different magazine
-change channels or start listening to the radio again
-try something you have never eaten before
-go somewhere new/ take a different route
-attend a public meeting
-do some sport
-paint/draw
-watch a live sports event
-do some charity work
-domestic chores -- do something new
-read something you wouldn't normally consider
-write a story
-exericise
-see a film either alone or with someone
-contact a long lost friend or relative
-try shopping somewhere different
-visit a museum or exhibition
-sit in a new place to your usual one, either at home or at work
-improve spelling-- use a dictionary to learn 10 new words
-make the first move to repair a broken friendship
-ride a bike
-meditate
-drive in a less aggressive manner

The thing is, I already do lots of those things.... and I am still fat.

OP posts:
oregonianabroad · 08/01/2008 13:14

oh, i forgot to add, you are supposed to note down when you will do these things, and then tick when you've done it.

sounds a bit like the things that McKenna tells you in his book, and I also recognized some bits of the Juicemaster there

oregonianabroad · 08/01/2008 13:36

There all much of a muchness, aren't they?

I just thought it might be fun to try working through something like this for a while.

I will defiantely take a closer look at it, when I got the time....

LaineyW · 09/01/2008 14:58

Hi, I'm doing the No Diet Diet too. As is typical of me at the moment, I forgot to get part 2! Also, when I did remember to go down to the newsagent this morning, there was no mention of the No Diet Diet on either the front page or anywhere else in the flamin' paper. Also no supplement.

Called into a different newsagent later in the day, and bingo. Different headlines, No Diet Diet splashed all over it and today's booklet nestling inside. Am I living in the twilight zone?

Anyway, I did manage to do the no TV thing yesterday (like you, oregonianabroad, I have mixed the days up already, and like to think of that as part of 'changing my habitweb'!) much to DH's disgust. He needs to lose more weight than I do, but isn't quite so enthusiastic about things as me...

We ended up going out for a Chinese meal with the kids. (It really is a no diet diet). Miraculously, I weighed less this morning than I did yesterday morning. Is this diet actually working I wonder? I have been much more active since starting it on Monday and have done things I wouldn't normally do: went to our local museum yesterday, drank honey and cider vinegar instead of tea this morning etc. etc. and did the writing thing last night (although I do write for a living so that wasn't really a chore!)

Will keep looking at your thread and keep you posted on my progress. Good luck. It makes perfect sense to me, you just have to get off your backside and do something less boring than watch TV. Easy peasy.....

oregonianabroad · 09/01/2008 21:37

OK, day 3 and I have forgotten to skip coffee, eaten an indian AND over-indulged chocolates... still haven't done anything from my list, yet....
oh, well. must do better.

Lainey, I don't have parts 3 or 4. Might order them from the INdy's website.

LaineyW · 10/01/2008 09:21

I've just ordered my missing part 2 from the website. Looking forward to today's 15-minute walk - that's a pretty easy one to do I suppose. It's the 'Think about what you want to do with your life' that's a bit harder!

I'm going to attempt to do some drawing tomorrow as one of my New Things To Try. I used to love drawing when I was at school but since then it's just something that's faded from my consciousness. How sad! It is making me wonder how many other things I used to love doing, that I just don't even think about any more... what an old bag. I'm only 46!

oregonianabroad · 10/01/2008 12:48

Oh dear, I haven't even read today's yet as I can't quite give up my morning coffee, at least not on a work day. luckily they say you can have extra days if you need them.

can i skip coffe, do the walk, and re-evaluate my life tomorrow do you think?

i meditated while ds1 was in the bath the other night, nearly fell asleep! Need to do at least 1 more thing from the list soon...

Hi Oregonianabroad,

Just wondered how you were getting on. I searched high and low for the fantastic wall chart which was promised in the Independent yesterday (Friday) but there was no sign of it. I'm not very impressed with the way they've gone about this promotion really... Plus no sign of part 2, (which we're supposed to start this week). Oh well, I guess there's lots to be going on with anyway. I'm about to get a sketch book out and do a drawing. Fingers crossed!

I failed miserably with the 'Get up an hour earlier one'. My husband had to get up ridiculously early for a day trip to Dublin and I was all set to join him at 6.30am but just couldn't manage it on these cold dark mornings. Maybe I'll attempt an early start tomorrow. Depends how much wine I get through tonight.

Hope you're still enthused!
