Any dentists around?

I've recently had root canal treatment. One of the roots was very hard to 'get to' and my dentist has said that one of the instruments used has snapped off and is now stuck!

So I've been referred to a specialist who will try to remove it....

He then said he would complete the treatment and put a crown on for free.

Should I be responsible for paying to see the specialist??

Thanks!

Yes

@RobinHumphries

Yes
Don’t be ridiculous Hmm

Instrument fracture is a recognised complication of root canal so yes it is up to you to pay to see a specialist if you decide to do that. Other options include extraction or monitoring the tooth.
Your dentist has offered you a free crown as a goodwill gesture which is very nice of him. Accept this offer graciously.

@ronjobbins I consider it ridiculous to respond on a thread that I know nothing about

I was offered a root canal treatment by my dentist but she made it clear that if she was unable to fulfil the procedure she would refer me on to a specialist. The alternative was a tooth extraction which I opted for from the start having read about issues with root canal treatments on here!

Thanks all - I would really love to save the tooth as I'm only 39.

Any ideas on cost from a specialist?

The one I refer to is £700 per tooth. A crown is £625 though so a free crown is pretty good.
These are not NHS prices but specialist root canal work wouldn’t happen on the NHS anyway.

wineandsunshine · 27/03/2022 08:16

Thanks @Bickles that does give me a rough idea on cost.

The only other alternative is to leave it in the tooth but I guess there is a risk of re-infection years down the line.

So, I've had a call to say the specialist is £800.....slightly annoyed!!!

OP posts:
Bickles · 29/03/2022 06:00

Why are you annoyed?

wineandsunshine · 29/03/2022 18:19

I just didn't expect the cost to be that high 😫

OP posts:
Bickles · 29/03/2022 19:14

Whereabouts are you? The £700 was in Yorkshire, it’ll be more down South.

wineandsunshine · 29/03/2022 20:00

@Bickles - yeah, Southampton!!
