that has not done any proper bm's in almost a week.
He is on Movicol, and has been for the past year.
Until recently we still put him into Pull up's in the night, because after a trial without, he started to withold poos again. And, at the time we felt that needs must, and if he was only gonna do them in a Nappy, if at all, than so be it!
However, he is 5 now, and we were told of by our GP for using Nappies at night. So, we decided that after X-mas, etc...was over we would take away the Nappies at night, which we did.
And now he hasn't done a proper bm, despite being on Movicol in double doses...he is soiling lightly all the time, which means he really does need to go big time....should we sod the Gp and put him back into pull ups or will he go eventually?

I would sod the GP!! what is more important that he is up to scratch on what he 'should ' be doing or that he gets relief and goes.

Go back to pulll ups then try again at a later date.

put him back in pull-ups.....how dare your doctor tall you this!!!

my DS2 is classed as chronically constipated. he is variously on movicol or senna, dependant on need, and in fact spent 2wks during the summer in southampton hospital being treated again as we were at a loss as treament at home.

while in hospital (DS2 is 5 BTW), he was in pull-ups and STILL soakid the bed, with wee and very loose poo. I was rather embarressed for him as he was so upset, but his consultant (dr beaty....wonderful man) was in no way phazed.

he explained to me that when my DS gets 'backed up'(for want of a better phrase), the pressure on him from bowel was huge and it had not only an effect on his bladder, but his bowel would spasm and effect the constipation badly as he would go into retention from the fear IYGWIM......knock on effect making it all worse......meaning yet more time trying to help him.

no-one at anytime suggested leaving him out of pull-ups, or made us feel bad for them. the descision to leave them off rested entirely with DS.....and as it happens he asked for it this xmas, and so far so good, as he was as ready as us[proud].

never ever go against your own instinct as a mummy, or that of a childs wishes, when it is to do with their health/emotional well-being etc.

and never listen to proffesionals who don't ive with your child and there-fore don't know how your child is IYGWIM.

there are some fab professionals out there, but for every one of them, there are 4 dire ones!!!!

go with your gut is what I say.....happy child = happy mum

Thank you to you both!

We are being referred to a paeditrician for this, as I went recently back to GP. I think GP's thinking was, that whilst he is allowed to poo into Nappies he is not going to learn not too.
I must admit, I am at a complete loss with ds on this one....because, well, his poops are, because of the Movicol, loose enough, so, they don't hurt him or anything.
He doesn't feel it, he says, which is not unusal, I know and well, he still finds it easier to poop standing up...
Oh, I really don't know....I shall try another few days, and then return to Nappies if nothing happens...
He isn't upset by not bieng in Nappies, but then, he isn't upset/ashamed of soiling, and the factor that probably helps the least is, that it doesn't bother him if he has done a poop in the Nappy....so, that doesn't discourage him.
We have started letting him rinse his own pants now, if he had a accident, and he doesn't like that...but I worry that that will put him off pooping even more, rather then discouraging the soiling, sigh...
