Husband kidney stones

A month ago my husband collapsed in terrible pain & was rushed into hospital in an ambulance. It was discovered it was a 5mm kidney stone making its way down. It was only bearable with morphine.
They sent him home, and he's since been back to hospital twice. They keep telling him it will eventually come out. He has another ct scan on 6th April and if not come out then they will operate.
The past month has been utter hell. He has been in agony on and off for the duration. Weeing blood. Can't sleep. Can't work. Can't function. Today he has broken down in tears and said he can't take it anymore. I've never seen him cry in 20 years.

Does anyone have experience of this? He can't face waiting another 2+ weeks for the scan and results. He has open access to the surgical assessment unit. Why won't they just operate?

Has he been given any medication to help the stone pass? Sorry I can't remember what it is called. My DH has these recently and passed it in a few days, after endless trips to a and e. If he is in that much pain I think I would get him to go back to A+E. They won't usually operate unless the stone is a certain size though.

Yes he was given two weeks of medication which he has finished now. It's the length of time that it's taking that's concerning me the most. He can't cope with it anymore

Ask the Dr for diclfenic supposotries

Diclofenac

He's used suppositories for 2 weeks. He's taken a cocktail of medications and it's caused his blood pressure to go very high so he's reluctant to take more

I would suggest either going back to GP or maybe even A&E if he is in that much pain. He shouldn't still be suffering after a month and he could have an infection.

He had sepsis from it initially which they treated. It's definitely moved down because his pain is in the bladder now but it's just not coming out! Will make him ring the hospital tomorrow

Have they offered him lithotripsy? I had that - it shatters the stone into teeny pieces so it can be passed

It's the usual treatment for stones over a certain size - can't remember what size! - so enquire about that

OMG I have so much sympathy for your poor husband. I had kidney stones recently and it is the worst pain I have ever felt in my life - including the two times I gave birth without so much as a paracetamol.
It’s a bit of a blur now tbh but I’m pretty sure the NHS told me 5mm is the limit on size before they consider any kind of surgery. I assume mine have just moved but not yet passed as, if they did I didn’t feel it, so I’m dreading it happening again. I’ve already decided if it does, I will do everything I can to get the money to go private. Flowers for your DH

If he is in that much pain and is passing blood I would go back to hospital, as other poster says maybe lithotripsy would work. He doesnt want the stone getting stuck of causing any damage on its way down.

I am so sorry to hear this - hope things have improved/they are sorting it.

My DH has had 3 bouts of kidney stones - first one just like your OP - he went to GP and was violently sick - they sent him to A&E - hospital kept him in for 3 days but couldn't work out what was wrong and sent him home weeing blood and in horrendous pain. At the time husband had private medical insurance and after a consult they said very large kidney stone & operated.

2nd time wasn't as bad - had lithotripsy which he said felt like being struck by a rubber band on yr skin but not painful and worked and he passed the fragments.

3rd time it was a small stove and naturally passed .

I hope your DH is getting an earlier scan or being offered treatment
