Feeling like something sticks in throat when swallowing

Like it says on the title!

Started having this occasionally last year, the last 2 weeks it keeps happening, regardless of how much I chew the food/drink.

Last night was awake for 2 hours trying to clear a tablet that got stuck, today a piece of apple, and even after a very chewed lunch it still feels like something is there!

Anyone had this and has any miracle cures?! It is getting very irritating now. Coughing does nothing, drinking does nothing, tried eating some bread to clear it, nothing. I don’t feel like it’s ‘gone down the wrong hole’ more like there’s a little ledge or pocket stuff gets stuck in. It feels right hand side, sort of down the back of the tongue (can’t reach it!)

It could be reflux. Equally there could be something there. See your GP / ENT.

GooGooDolls · 22/03/2022 13:03

I saw a thread on here about a swollen uvula - don't know how to link. But could it be that?

CurlsLDN · 22/03/2022 13:08

Could be reflux, could be anxiety, could be something.

I had this and had a few drs appointments where they suggested the above and sent me home many times before I finally got referred to ENT who put a camera up my nose/down my throat and took a look, and found a growth there. It was a birth defect and had been there since I was in the womb, very slowly growing until it became uncomfortable for me. I had surgery to have it removed and no issues since.

I would get what you describe, where food was either actually stuck, or was irritating it on the way past so it felt stuck. Also when I lay down on my back it would feel as though my throat was closed (turns out it pretty much was!)

I gather what I had is quite rare but also not scary or serious in any way, just something to get removed.

So I suppose my advice Is if it persists do go to the gp and try to get referred to ENT for a proper look. There's lots of things it could be that they can explore.

Tonsil stone?

ChimneyPot · 22/03/2022 13:11

You need to go to your GP. Dysphagia always needs to be investigated.

There are usually harmless causes but ghee can be very serious ones too.

jusdepamplemousse · 22/03/2022 13:13

I had this and was referred for a scope, all was grand, it was reflux, but you need to get checked.

Nelliephant1 · 22/03/2022 13:13

This really must be checked out. It's likely nothing, but please don't leave it.

NotwhatIthoughtitwouldbe · 22/03/2022 13:14

I actually specialize in dysphagia (swallowing problems) - what you're describing could be a few things. As pp said, could be globus pharyngeus from acid reflux, could be a pharyngeal pouch where food/drink can get 'caught' or a few other things. Do you ever bring back up food/drink after you've swallowed?
I would definitely see your GP who will probably recommend ENT have a look.

LindaEllen · 22/03/2022 13:21

This 100% needs investigating. I used to have this, it was anxiety. But it equally might not be.

Bunnyfuller · 22/03/2022 13:24

I rarely have heartburn but am ace at burping! Don’t really feel like acid coming up, and ditto very rare I bring food back up (unless I see something hideous like Boris Johnson on TV or something).

I read somewhere that a can of coke can help (not trying to swallow the whole can, obvs) so am going to try that and will get onto GP if I can get in!

Thanks, wasn’t expecting quite this response Confused

Hi OP
I had this a few years ago and the only thing that helped was soda water, I found the bubbles seemed to get the trapped air out of you see what I mean.

Samarie123 · 22/03/2022 13:32

I just read your message about the can of coke, and while it would probably help you may find you need a lot of it so go for soda cos not only did it help with the throat feeling it also helped alleviate the panic that set in with it

Trust me it's acid reflux. At some point, now you're at this stage. You'll visit the GP.

I ignored mine, I don't get heartburn anymore and neither can I lie flat in bed.

RainBow725 · 22/03/2022 13:48

I get food stuck in my tonsils all the time - lots of scar tissue from childhood tonsillitis. A careful poke around with a cotton bud soaked in TCP usually does the trick. Might be worth a try.

Bunnyfuller · 22/03/2022 13:50

Thanks @RainBow725 it’s lower than tonsils, def after it urns a corner!
