Swollen eyelid and pain :(

lana29 · 22/03/2022 12:02

Sunday night I started getting a pain whenevr I opened and closed the eyelid, not in the eyes and it was sore to touch. Monday morning I woek up and my eyelid was swollen (just left side) I booked into the optician and she said blepharitits but this morning it’s more noticeable. Does anyone have any remedies? I’m going on holiday in few weeks and not sure how long to expect it to last! I think optician also mentioned about something maybe being blocked :(( its ouch! And vision a bit blurry today!

I think you're supposed to wash your eyelids and lashes with baby shampoo and that helps get rid of it

streamee · 22/03/2022 19:41

Hot salt water compress

alexdgr8 · 22/03/2022 19:42

go ask pharmacist.

SusannahD · 22/03/2022 19:49

Please see your GP to check, you might need antibiotics, could possibly be periorbital cellulitis. Looks painful and even if blepharitits looks like you might need antibiotics.

CiderWithLizzie · 22/03/2022 19:51

Looks like a chalazion to me. Someone else posted on here the other day who had one too.

streamee · 22/03/2022 19:54

It's literally just a stye

@streamee It was optician who told me blepharitits, after checking eyes. Yet it got more painful and is hurting. :(

@CiderWithLizzie does it clear up on it’s own? :(

@SusannahD seeing gp on Monday though that was about something else, hoping to god it clears :(

Maybe try the pharmacy if GP can’t see you until Monday. They might be able to give some antibiotic eye drops over the counter.

CiderWithLizzie · 22/03/2022 20:18

The other poster was given oral antibiotics by an ophthalmologist. Her eyelid looked worse than yours.
I have had a chalazion that needed a very minor op to get rid of it but hopefully yours will clear up on its own.

This is a god send! The ointment… not the drops! Eases the pain straight away

@CiderWithLizzie Oh god, I hope it just goes. How long did you have before surgery? Did GP refer? Was it painful op? xx

If blepharitis as optician suggested, very regular cleaning will help. You can use diluted baby shampoo to gently scrub at your lash line. You can also use a mild salt water solution, as hot as you can manage. Hold it on the eye lid for a while and then swipe outwards. I would do this several times daily until it starts to settle. Then maintain it morning and night for a while. My daughter gets blepharitis and this is how we get it under control. Good luck!

CiderWithLizzie · 22/03/2022 20:44

I had it for about 4 weeks before I decided to get it removed. I have severe blepharitis, ocular surface disease (dry eye) and Meibomium gland dysfunction. Yours will hopefully resolve without surgery.

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 22/03/2022 20:51

Go back to the optician not a GP. They are the experts on eyes and can prescribe medication if needed. GP’s don’t have the tools needed to have a proper look.

@ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor I’ll go back to optician, she did have a look yesterday and couldn’t see anything though when she did try look below the eyelid I moved away as was very painful.

@CiderWithLizzie Did it cost much? Any issues since? I’m hoping it does go, I have history of blepharitits and dry eye but never had this happen :(

I’m afraid it cost a few hundred pounds - less than £500 though I think. It was about 3 years ago.
It wasn’t painful although I could feel pressure. The ophthalmologist uses a special clamp and turns your lid inside out to remove the cyst from the inside of your eye lid. I had a bit of a black eye afterwards but it completely went.

underneaththeash · 23/03/2022 08:46

OP - it's a chalazion, I can see the lump. Follow the advice here.

www.moorfields.nhs.uk/sites/default/files/Chalazion.pdf

Hopefully you can discharge it before it goes hard and needs cutting out.

They are more common in people who have MGD (meibomian gland dysfuntion) which in turn causes dry eye. You need to be scrubbing the lids 2 x a day with either prepared wipes or diluted baby shampoo and cotton buds. Washing hair daily also seems to help.

If nothing is clearing the blocked glands, you can have a 3 month course of a particular antibiotic to try and clear it. But you need to be referred for that.

LIZS · 23/03/2022 09:01

I use a gel eye mask , either chilled or warmed. I did develop a cyst inside my eyelid which was removed privately, fortunately under dh work bupa.

lana29 · 23/03/2022 09:14

Oh damn, I hope it will clear up on it’s own, with this does it allow for eye antibiotics as I can’t tolerate oral antibiotics? Damn!

Golden eye from the chemist. As pp said, was the area with baby shampoo diluted. And rinse with cooked boiled water. Use a flannel and not a towel on your face as you shouldn't use it more than once with this going on.

Do not touch your eye.

For soothingness but not a treatment, steep chamomile tea and cook in the fridge. Get a cotton wool pad soaked in the cold tea and apply to the eye like a compress. Will really help with the pain!
