K-Wires in wrists

Larafromthe80s · 21/03/2022 00:01

I'm 1 week post surgery. I have my follow up tomorrow but have no idea what to expect other than xray?
Does it hurt when the wires are removed?
And did you get put in another cast after removal? Any info would be greatly appreciated especially regarding timeframes
I'm expecting I think around 6 weeks of wires but no idea of anything beyond that and just curious.
Thanks

I had K wires for 12 weeks, mine were removed when my cast came off. I have to say that it was one of the scariest moments of my life when the surgeon came towards me with the pliers to pull the wires out, but it did only hurt for a second - though it was a very weird feeling. I did have a complex set of fractures and reconstruction, so the time was longer than usual

For a standard distal radius fracture in normal bone, if take wires out at 4 weeks and change cast to a splint at that point.

Taking wires out no worse than a blood test if done properly.

Obviously each situation is different and your 'prescription' may not be the same

Thanks very much. Wires booked for removal 5 weeks today providing x-ray looks ok. Then they said approximately 2 weeks after that for me to be able to drive.

Can't remember about timing, but it didn't hurt getting the wires out! It was quite a relief actually Smile

I can't remember if I had another cast or a wrist brace when my wires were removed. I have to say that I was dreading the wire removal, but it didn't hurt at all. I just looked away, and the plaster tech held my good hand as my husband had chosen that moment to go to the loo. It was over in seconds for all 4 wires and not at all gory.

If your arm gets painful soon, it could be that the cast has got loose once the swelling goes down. It's called knocking as the wires touch the loose cast, and you need to pop back to be replastered. I think I had 3 different casts before I was done. Wishing you good healing.

Oh that's very interesting as I think I may be getting towards that point now. I'm feeling a lot of movement that I wasnt before and,it's giving a sensation of the wires rubbing now.
Thank you! Smile
