Whooshing and whistling in my ear driving me bonkers!

For months I've had this really annoying noise in my left ear. Sounds like when you hear your babys heartbeat and you can hear whooshing noise if you know what I mean? It can increase in pitch till its almost whistling.
Theres no reason for it happening, if I stand up or bend over I hear it. Or just sitting. Or turn my head. Or nothing. It just starts.
I try to open my mouth wide to stop it or shake my head or well sometimes nothing stops it.
I can be in bed and it starts if I lie different.
It is getting to the stage where its unbearable. I feel anxious and stressed cos I can't bloody hear cos of the whooshing. I'm already on antidepressants for anxiety/depression, have been for years.
Has anyone any tips before I lose my mind? thanks

Sounds like tinnitus. A relative has it

AlisonDonut · 20/03/2022 21:32

tinitus?
have you tried holding your nose and closing your mouth and breating out to pop the pressure in your ears?

my chiro used to pull my earlobes down to release pressure as well.

It sounds like, if not tinitus, a build up of pressure and you need to release it like when you are in an airplane.

iklboo · 20/03/2022 21:33

It sounds like tinnitus. Really bloody annoying & unfortunately there's no outright cure. You do get used to it but I totally sympathise. I have storm sounds / white noise on at night which sort of cancels it out and helps me sleep.

TINNITUS

Cyberworrier · 20/03/2022 21:38

I had something similar happen and it turned out my ears were very blocked, had them syringed by a nurse. I would get that checked in case it is something physical like that.

HeckinMiffed · 20/03/2022 21:45

Tinnitus, my grandma had that. Thanks for the link @iklboo interesting reading. bloody drives me potty!
Holding noise and blowing out sounds helpful thanks! and earlobe pulling-its worth a try.
Do I need to make an appointment with GP? Its nigh on impossible to get one nowadays. No cure.....yikes!

Have you had any dizzy spells? I had a whooshing noise in my ear for weeks, couldn’t hear properly at all, and then I started getting dizzy spells. I went to the GP and it was viral labyrinthitis and I had to have antibiotics.

HeckinMiffed · 20/03/2022 21:49

Just reading that link, I have anxiety and depression and am on antidepressants, wonder if thats caused it? Certainly making me feel anxious!

I’d be trying olive oil drops to see if it’s wax causing it.

HeckinMiffed · 20/03/2022 22:07

Thanks, will give olive oil a try tomorrow. Havent had any dizzy spells, just usual if i stand up too quickly, but thanks @Mamette I'll keep an eye on that

I had this and sorted it out by using beconase. It returns occasionally but a few days of beconase sorts it out again.

HeckinMiffed · 21/03/2022 20:35

Ooh @Chewbecca what's beconase? I'll try anything!

Dont put anything in your ears smaller than an elbow.... unless a doctor says otherwise!! Not oil...not cotton wool buds..
Try Beconase if you like.. seeing a doctor would be even better..
Information at British Tinnitus Association..

WeirdlyKind · 21/03/2022 20:52

Tinnitus can also be a sign of anaemia so it might be a good idea to get your bloods checked.

Chewbecca · 21/03/2022 20:58

Beconase is a nasal spray, decongestant and mild steroid. It’s used for hay fever mostly I think (I don’t have hay fever!). You can buy it over the counter in any chemist.

It was a GP that suggested it to me, my symptoms were hearing my heartbeat & whooshing, especially in bed and I shook and blew with no impact at all! At first I thought it was a clock or watch ticking by the bed, then discovered I couldn’t find it and DH couldn’t hear it.

The GP called mine Eustachian Tube Dysfunction.

HeckinMiffed · 21/03/2022 22:23

Thanks, I don't tend to put anything in my ears except a towel . seeing a GP is pretty hard just now!
Thought Beconase was a spray. Interestingly, I've recently been using Otrivine Sinusitis Spray for a wee cold I've got. its great stuff as it really helps me breathe when my sinuses get blocked. My sinuses do get easily blocked and I have a bit of hayfever occasionally.
Its my heartbeat and whooshing I can hear, its so frustrating!

thank you!

I had this exact thing. Went to the GP and he said I had a massive tear in that eardrum! Gave me steroid spray for my dodgy ear and nose tubes. It did go away after a bit.

Chewbecca · 30/03/2022 08:37

Any joy hecked?

HeckinMiffed · 01/04/2022 21:26

@Chewbecca

Any joy hecked?
Mixed tbh. I bought Beconase spray but haven't used it yet as last two days it hasnt been nearly so bad. Thanks for tip, I'll likely try and get a Dr appointment too.

@WeirdlyKind

Tinnitus can also be a sign of anaemia so it might be a good idea to get your bloods checked.
It can also mean slight dehydration as well. Annoyingly slight ime.
Sarahplane · 01/04/2022 22:45

I have this, it drives me up the wall. I also quite often have lots of stuffiness so might give the beconase a try. Funnily enough when I had bad ear ache about 5 years ago was told that was due to eustachian tube disfunction so maybe connected? I also have anxiety too.

Nospringchickendipper · 02/04/2022 09:53

I had this when I lay down at night . I had some blood test and my iron was low since being prescribed iron the whooping sound has gone.

Malotkins · 02/04/2022 09:57

It sounds like it could be a build up of wax. You can buy an ear syringer from amazon really cheaply. Very satisfying when it's all flushed out ☺

MyfriendArchie · 02/04/2022 10:03

I’ve had tinnitus for years which is enough to drive you insane but in recent years it was also accompanied by the whooshing and thumping. I have been very anaemic and had to have iron infusions 6 weeks ago. The whooshing has gone but sadly the tinnitus is hear to stay. You have my sympathies, it does drive you mad but I’ve learned not to focus on it (easier said than done but practice regularly and you can zone it out).

HeckinMiffed · 02/04/2022 21:38

there are so many potential causes for it! I'm a clencher and teeth grinder cos of anxiety, that definitely doesn't help! Never thought of anaemia, its worth checking!
I do try to zone it out but its so stressful I struggle!
