Thrush in young girls - any one else have experience of this?

Both DD's have thrush - bright red 'front bottoms'. It doesn't seem to bother them at all but it makes you wince when you see it and (TMI warning) their bottoms smell a bit 'fishy' ... not like a child's bottom should smell. They are 5 and 3 years old.
I took DD1 to the doctor with it last year (before DD2 started getting it) and she confirmed it was thrush and gave me Canesten cream for her and that was pretty much it.

I've put away the wet wipes from in the loo (which we used for poos); we're re-training them on wiping their bottoms properly after using the loo; they'll be no bubble bath until it's sorted; and, we're using the Canesten cream on them both every night.

Is it normal for such young girls to get thrush?

Is there anything else I could be doing?

Mine get it quite a bit too

I just slap on the Canestan when it rears it's head

I don't use soap or bubbles in the bath ever - or babywipes ever

I am the same though - any bubble baths and I am BURNING UP

Obviously I could't say that to my MIL when she gave me 10xbubblebaths for xmas ("Oh dear! It's a lovely thought but I'm afraid these will quite set my vagina on fire!")

A friend's daughter recently developed it after a course of antibiotics and her GP said it's not unusual at all. Hope they get better soon.

Dd's had recurrent bouts of it since she was very young - certainly less than 2. It's pretty common, I think.

You're doing the right kinds of things. Ironing the gussets of knickers on high heat can help (apparently it kills any spores which are still lurking after they've been washed).

@ morningpaper - yes, that would have surprised your MIL had you said that!!!

I don't really get it (although I did a bit after both births) and I was so surprised that such young girls did ... it made me wonder whether I was doing something wrong ... you know how we all want our children's health to be perfect as much as possible!

when i got it when pg dr told me to sit in bath of salt water to ease the itching soreness! sorry my sis is 16 and gets it from having antibiotics!

I knew that it was quite common after anti-biotics but was clueless that such young children (well ... girls in any case) could get it.
