Armpit Lump

I just wanted to share my experiences when I noticed an armpit lump recently. While using Dr Google scared me sooo much and made me cry for days, I did find reading real life experiences here on Mumsnet so informative, reassuring and calming. Maybe this post can help someone feel the same one day.

A few months ago, I noticed a visible swelling in my left armpit because it kept being itchy. No rash or other skin changes. No pain. I did not feel anything underneath when I pressed the swelling and decided to try and forget about it. Hard to do when you have the tendency to be anxious about the big C. The armpit itching continued on and off afterwards but I was never sure if I imagined it because I knew that it could be a big C symptom.

About 2 months later, following another prodding session of the swelling, I noticed an actual swollen area nearby in the same armpit. It was long (1.5cm) and thin. No pain. No other symptoms.

I decided to see the GP to get it checked. After an armpit examination, he announed that he thought the two areas were swollen lymph nodes. This was followed by a breast exam (nothing found), comprehensive blood tests (nothing found) and a course of antibiotics in case the nodes were caused by a bacterial infection (they were not). I was a wreck during these subsequent two weeks of testing and waiting. My possibly short future was all I could think about (I'm mid-40s with children). Such a miserable time.

The next step was an 'urgent breast cancer referral' (the actual name on the document that scared the living daylights out of me). However, thanks to Mumsnet, I learned that this was a routine next step to rule out the big C rather than diagnose it (in fact, in most referral cases the results are benign). Knowing this helped me so tremendously to try and keep calm. I found great comfort in similar threads on here with mostly positive outcomes. The wait was unbearable as it was so hard to keep level headed all the time while pretending to most people that I was fine.

The referral was supposed to result in a breast clinic appointment within two weeks but my GP forgot to send it in for a week. My local hospital also operated on a two to four weeks appointment basis. I could not wait that long to find an answer and decided to privately fund an appointment at a nearby Spire Hospital.

A week later I found myself in the waiting room at their one stop breast clinic. First step: consultant. He examined both armpits and could not feel any swollen lymph nodes. Breasts felt fine too. Second step: mammogram for reassurance. All fine. Third step: armpit ultrasound. All fine. And the consultant sent me home. What a relief, I had been fine all along!

The 4 weeks from GP appointment to seeing the consultant were the hardest. Waiting messes with your mind so much. But I am grateful to Mumsnet users who have shared their experiences in the past. I knew what to expect and that you can come out ok on the other side. Such a comfort. Thank you.

I realise this thread is a few months old but thanks for this Angelsings. I have a raised lymph node between my right boob and armpit and I'm feeling a bit anxious at the moment.

I had a two week referral age 30, 4 years ago and remember losing it with anxiety last time but trying to just think it's hopefully nothing this time (I haven't been to a doctor yet).

@Rosesandstars The waiting for appointments and answers is the worst, isn't it? Your brain goes to the absolute worst places. I hope you get a GP appointment and referral very soon. And that it turns out to be nothing serious.

Hi, just found this by putting in a search. I’m so anxious and just want tomorrow to come so I can make a GP appointment!

So around 7 months ago I realised while I was in the bath that my right armpit was swollen. I had just found out I was pregnant so put it down to possible hormones because I couldn’t find a lump. Fast forward to around 2 months ago and I noticed it was still there, asked my husband to examine and he said it looked ok just a bit swollen, no concern. So I thought nothing of it, that I’m just being paranoid and just wait it out. Fast forward to this evening and my husband saw that there was this dark spot on my breast, think it was just a vein, but then he saw the swelling and was a bit like “oh my god” and now he is a bit concerned so obviously I did some reading and all the advice tells you to call a GP if you have XXX, and one of the things is swelling in the armpit. So not just a lump as I thought and now I’m so worried. Worried that I’ve been having breathlessness and palpitations often since a few months, I put it down to pregnancy but now I’m worried if they’re connected. I’m just kicking myself that I put it down to pregnancy or paranoia or whatever and not actually getting it checked out.

Anyway here is a picture of the swelling (picture is mirrored so that’s why it’s on the other side).

I know no one might not read this tonight and reassure me but I just feel like I just needed to get this out because it’s all I have on my mind at the moment!! And don’t feel like I can confide in any of my friends or family for some reason.

Hi @Gem123J. It's so scary to find something different anywhere near the armpit. The fact that you cannot feel a lump or anything underneath the swelling is good. I still have a swelling right in my armpit, no lump. It didn't come up as anything worrysome when I got checked out a year ago and it hasn't disappeared either. Fatty deposit most likely. It's good to get the swelling checked out regardless, for your own sanity.

This is probably unrelated for you but one of my hips is misaligned and higher than the other (apparently quite common). This has shifted my body fat up on one side so I feel more squishy on the left than on the right hand side.

Hellon thoughts on this under my armpit? Fatty deposit?

Mandypop · 14/02/2023 18:58

@Mandypop My fatty tissue swelling looks very similar to yours. When I press on it, it's soft and there is nothing underneath that I can feel other than normal armpit stuff. I got it checked out in the end though because I'm a worrier.

Did you get the all clear in the end? I have a swelling/lump between right armpit and breast. GP has referred me and appointment in a couple of weeks but I'm worried sick.
