8 year old dd - worrying eating habits?

My dd1 (9 in Feb) has always been a fussy eater, but now seems to be getting worse. For a few months, she has been eating relatively little and never finishing her meals. She had the norovirus before Xmas and this also seemed to unsurprisingly dent her appetite a bit.

Now she's becoming increasingly picky. The other day, she wouldn't eat her dinner (pasta prepared no differently to normal) because it was on a plate she doesn't normally have. Another time she refused the lunch because the pasta (previously her favourite food) was two different lengths (I'd had to open a new packet to mix with the old, so it was the same type of pasta but a different size!!). And this evening, she wouldn't eat the sausages because they were bendy, not straight! AAGH! She always eats fruit/vegetables and has no problems with carbs in general, it is usually the meat/protein item she objects to.

She also says she is fat pinching the non-existent 'fat' on her stomach, even though her weight is completely average. I try to reassure her, but it isn't working. I try to be laid back about it all and not fuss if she doesn't eat, but I'm getting quite worried . I don't go on about dieting in relationg to myself much either.

I can see why you're worried - perhaps you could have a casual chat to her and ask if there are any issues she wants to chat about.

If you can't see an obvious answer, perhaps you could make an appointment for just you to go and chat to the GP and ask what you can do to help before it goes too far.
Other than that, she might just be being tricky as she doesn't have much appetite after the bug and doesn't feel like eating anything.

Thanks luciemule, I'll just keep hoping that it's the after-effects of the bug for now and try not to make a fuss. If it goes on for a while though, I think I will visit the GP. It's hard not to worry, with so much emphasis on weight/eating problems these days...

I know what you mean - my dd is 6 and I'm really worried about her reaching that impressionable age where the media become more of an influence. Scary stuff- - but it is good that you're not making an issue of it.

My 8yr old dd has been the same after sickness bug saying could get food poising if she eats, we are keeping a eye on her.
