Why is my eye & random parts of my body twitching?

For around the last 7 months my left eye has been twitching, my right eye occasionally and more recently a part of my arm and the back of my head.

I thought it could be eye strain because I was getting headaches. I got my eyes tested and I needed new glass which I've now got. The headaches have gone but the twitching is still there plus the other body parts twitching.

Its definitely not tiredness because over the last few months I'm getting way more sleep than before due to my toddler sleeping through.

Has anyone had this? Or have any ideas of what it could be?

Had this after trying plant based diet for 6 months. Stopped that and started taking vitamin D and it eventually went. Best get a GP appointment though.

I've never been sure what it is, but I've had this since I was a teenager (now mid 40s).
I get it in my legs and arms most. Usually lasts for a few seconds at a time.
I can actually see my arm or leg twitching in one place while I'm still.
It doesn't bother me. It sort of reminds me of being pregnant and the baby moving, but in my leg and arm if that makes sense.

Maybe a vitamin deficiency. Have you been breastfeeding?

Soul11Soul · 12/03/2022 20:12

Most likely a vitamin deficiency. As pp said vitamin d deficiency can cause twitching. So can low b12. Tiredness and too much caffeine can also make me twitchy.

TrooBloo · 12/03/2022 20:20

Could be lots of things. See your Gp.

Benign fasciculation syndrome. People seem to identify medications, infections, trauma and anxiety as the cause. In the absence of other symptoms it's not likely to be anything serious. B vitamins, iron or magnesium might make a difference but it seems for most people it's just one of those things.

BertieBotts · 12/03/2022 20:40

Vitamin D would definitely make sense given the time of year if you are not taking it. Most people in the UK are deficient particularly in the winter months.

PeacefulPrune · 12/03/2022 21:27

Thanks for all your replies. I haven't been breast feeding. I've been taking vitamin D and magnesium.

I guess I better speak to GP, it's so hard to get an app at the moment though.

I had a twitchy eye for about 4 months during a very stressful and anxiety ridden time in my life. The twitching disappeared when the main source of stress got resolved. Maybe something to look at too.

Hedonism · 12/03/2022 21:39

I get the eye thing when I am tired and stressed. Sometimes it's how I know I've pushed it too far and need to stop and look after myself.

FrDamo · 12/03/2022 22:50

Eyelid twitching is called myokymia (generally benign) or blepharospasm (may need referral and treatment).

Causes are varied. No harm having a google to see if anything resonates with you.

I don't feel qualified to comment on other bodily twitching.

TunnelOfGoats · 12/03/2022 22:55

I had this when I had a B12 deficiency before I treated it. Now I only very occasionally get a twitch when I'm very tired

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/03/2022 23:10

I was going to say tiredness - my eye does this when strained. It’s probably nothing but see your Gzp to check.

Gwenhwyfar · 12/03/2022 23:13

I definitely thought eye twitching was tiredness or stress. It's pretty common.

Mamabear12 · 12/03/2022 23:19

Had this as well. It happens when stressed or depleted in vitamins. I had it 17 years ago after a few many nights out, being stressed etc. I took a few nights off, had banana, vitmains, slept well and it went straight away. Had more recently a few weeks bc of stress. Again, vitamins, healthy eating, trying to sleep better (not as easy as long ago, as not have 3 kids and youngest 2 still wakes, plus the dog wakes me!)...anyway, after a few weeks its mostly gone....

mrsfollowill · 12/03/2022 23:25

Stress and tiredness with me - my boss is the same it's always obvious when she is stressed as her right eye twitches like mad. It's not normal for you though so I would persevere and try and see the doctor.

Are you in your 40s? I'm 49 and have been experiencing this since May last year. I did lots of googling, afraid it was something serious, and found quite a few articles and health forums suggesting muscle twitching is one of the lesser known symptoms of fluctuating hormones, estrogen in particular.

That's interesting because I'm mid-forties and haven't had it for years. I used to get it in my 20s and 30s.
