gastritis - what foods would help? Can anything else help? (I am pregnant)

The doctor thinks I have gastritis. I have been suffering from heartburn and nausea/pain for a while. Doc has given me something for the heartburn and something else for the nausea, but I would like to try to treat the cause too and try to reduce the inflammation.

I also have IBS so I am sure that stress is playing a part...

If anyone could advise this would be fantastic - this is worse than the morning sickness

Sympathies, polly.

Try eating small amounts of bland food regularly. Leaving your stomach empty for long periods can make the gastritis worse. Avoid the usual stuff - coffee, alcohol, spicy foods, etc. Tomatoes can cause heartburn - very acidic too. Milk based products can be soothing.

After eating, sit down for a while. Avoid stooping or bending over.

Don't eat late at night.

Dh had this when I was expecting ds3. IIRC, tea, coffee, alcohol and anything acidic were off limits. He was very ill with it, so much so that he had ECGs and cardiograms etc.

Things that set me off - fatty foods, coffee, alcohol and diary products set off my heartburn and IBS

Pollyanna · 05/01/2008 10:17

Thanks for this. It's quite difficult really as I have read that milk is good for the gastritis, but am told that it is bad for the IBS. I haven't really isolated what causes either, although I know that apples and porridge cause me problems. I think that coffee is also a big culprit. I don't drink so that isn't a problem

Gaviscon!!!

I had gastritis instead of morning sickness and dairy would always set me off. The good bit was that I lost 7 kg in the first trimester and only put that back on by the time ds arrived, so was lighter after having him than before getting pregnant and have kept it off (ignoring the fact that I was about 25kg overweight in the first place.....)

The gastritis cleared up about the same time morning sickness would have done and didn't come back in the later stages, so I hope you feel better soon.

The best bit was for once my office manager actually listened to me when I told him to go away during an attack, although that might have been because my head started spinning round when he started wittering on about the football when I was doubled over the desk trying not to be ill.....

I am 18 weeks pregnant and get crippling attacks of gastric pain, to the point where I cannot stand straight or swallow even water without being in horrendous agony.

My dr has just prescribed me Gaviscon advance to take as needed, and 20mg Mepradec which reduces the production of stomach acid which I take daily to hopefully avoid any further attacks.

Over the counter you can but ranitidine (Zantac) which works well for me during the less bad attacks although a pharmacist is unlikely to let you buy it if he knows you are expecting. It's prescribed fairly freely in America though, but dr's here seem to be a bit more cautious.

Hope you feel better soon.

Not sure why I thought you were pregnant, so ignore that part.

sarahtibs · 06/01/2008 09:08

haha, I see now where I read you were pregnant

Pollyanna · 06/01/2008 14:55

Gaviscon only works for a very short time as the heartburn seems resistant to it although ranitidine is better (I may ask for meprodac though) but it is the nausea that is more unbearable. The doc has prescribed metoclopramide tablets which help, but I wondered if there are any dietary adjustments (or supplements) I can try that might help too. I am reluctant to take tablets for a long time (doc won't investigate this until I have had the baby).
