Nose feels bruised after wisdom tooth extraction

Have had debilitating toothache and headache for weeks. Had my upper right wisdom tooth pulled yesterday afternoon. The pain didn't change in the last almost 36 hours but, alarmingly, tonight the right side and bridge of my nose feels painfully bruised when I touch it. I tried to have an early night but woke up after an hour with a spacey feeling and this odd pain which may have spread from my gums to the side and bridge of my nose. It feels like there's something very tender in the skin which is adding to the head ache, but the skin itself doesn't really look marked or particularly red. I've got naseptin cream and I use it sometimes if I get staph blotches on/around my nose, which I've developed in the last couple of days, but this is different, like the bone under the skin is aching. I haven't banged my face at all, the extraction went smoothly enough, so I'm really puzzled. And sore 😬

A wisdom tooth extraction can be quite a procedure so some bruising is inevitable.

How long did it take to get the tooth out? Was it a difficult or straightforward extraction (did he have to climb on your chest to get enough leverage to pull it out 😬)?

Haha, no it was actually pretty straightforward and there was no drama! Although he did marvel at how hooked the roots were, not sure if that was significant?!

Got an urgent GP appointment later this morning. So fed up with losing teeth and still being in pain. I've had all sorts of referrals and sympathetic noises over the years, this medication, that medication, but in the end nothing changes. How on earth can they not know more about stuff like this, or at least test for things at a bacterial level as a matter of course? Hmm

Good luck. Please update...

Hey OP, have you ever been diagnosed with tmjd? I had both my upper wisdom teeth out due to toothache but turned out it was myofascial pain masquerading as toothache. Although the wisdom teeth were decayed, I don't think that was the source of the pain iyswim. Tmjd can also cause neuralgia in the face, which can cause a range of weird symptoms. I get that bruised sensation often too. Once chronic tmjd is really difficult to treat. For me the best things that have helped are hypnotherapy, physio and upping my magnesium/b12/folate. Short term diazepam can be helpful too. Some people swear by gabapentin/amitriptyline but I'm guessing you've already tried them. Have you ever had acupuncture? I haven't personally but it's supported by a lot of high quality research and is often recommended by chronic pain consultants.

Thank you both for reading my posts and thinking of me. GP has put me on doxycycline for 28 days, in case of anything bacterial going on. Prescribed me a lot of high strength cocodamol. I've got pain management stuff coming up, including CBT, so another angle of defence hopefully. Over the years I've been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia, atypical orafacial pain, TMJD, migraine, you name it. Can't take triptans, gabapentin, anti-epilepsy drugs etc because of severe osteoporosis - lots of medications lower bone mineral density and that's a red line for me, sadly. Part of the misery of my situation is that I'm very limited in what I can try. I've taken diazepam occasionally but find it difficult to come off. I'm a wreck lol.

But acupuncture... I need to look into that so thank you for the suggestion @JustLikeJesseJames How are things for you at the moment?

I was wondering if it could be trigeminal neuralgia.

My neighbour suffers from it. Before it was diagnosed she had some teeth removed thinking they were the source of her pain

Not much helps her when it flares unfortunately

Hope you get it sorted
