Pretty sure they don't need a pint a day once they're one and they can get loads of the same things from yoghurt/cheese etc. I thought it was 400ml or something a day once they were past one.

does she have milk on her cereal? If so is it whole milk? Cheese, yoghurts, other dairy stuff?

I had the same issue with DS1 who I intended to wean off the breast at 1yr......but was stilling plugging away until 14 months when my HV asked what other dairy stuff he was having.....when I told her she told me just to stop the BF's if that was what I wanted to do.

So I did - DS1 didn't drink milk as a drink until he was about 3/4yrs old - but doesn't seem to have done him any harm.

you can give the pint in cheese, yoghurts, cream cheese and milk mixed into mashed tatty etc etc, my friend had the same with her son, but they managed ok, plus if things get really bad, you could always introduce the concept of (holds breath and waits for a mumsnet attack) the milkshake straw (you know the nesquick flavoured ones that we'd happily managed to avoid till dd1 had one at a friends house) but they do get them drinking more milk!

the minimum from 1 year is around 350mls (12oz) but that includes milk in cereal, in foods, in cooking, dairy products and any other foods containing calcium e.g. leafy greens. They dont need to take much (if any) milk as long as they have other sources of the same nutrients.

My wee one has never had cows milk, has rice milk with calcium.

Ab31 · 04/01/2008 20:31

Breathe Frizbe. breathe!
She has milk in porridge and cheese in recipes (won't eat it on its own) and is hit and miss with yoghurt. I've not done much experimenting with different brands/flavours of yoghurt. (Note to self...must make more of an effort....).
Is that enough though? A pint sounds like loads!

Yeo Valley Jumble yogs seem to go down a treat - only ones DD will eat, have you tried them Ab31?

rachw1 · 05/01/2008 13:06

My dd has never liked milk since she stopped bf at 10 months. I was worried about it but the health visitor said it was only a concern if they also refused any dairy products - she has always eaten loads of cheese, yoghurt etc. so it was fine. She still won't drink milkshake, has milk on cereal but doesn't actually finish the milk and is now 10 years old.

Love MN for making you realise that no problem you have hasn't been had by hundreds of others before you!
Will try the jumble yogs, thanks. She has +/- 160ml of milk in porridge so will be 190mls short. Roughly how much is in a yoghurt or piece of cheese? No idea if I need to aim at one of each a day or 10 of each!

I think a yogurt is around 4ozs (not sure in mls)

I wouldnt worry to much tbh, you would be suprised at the amount of food that contains milk, sauages for example. My DD is lactose intolerant, so we have to cut out all diary and the amount of suff that she cannot eat because it contains milk is unbeilable.
