Low resting heart rate

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/03/2022 20:48

I recently stopped smoking and can see on my Fitbit that my resting heart rate has gone from around 65 to around 59. I am just watching TV at the moment, and could see it was 55bpm when I glanced at my wrist there. Slightly freaked out! I am not sure how accurate Fitbit is - is this cause for concern?

I am normal BMI, 40s, and in my fourth week smoke-free.

No, not a cause for concern.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/03/2022 20:55

Thank you for that fast response! Google says 60-100 is normal.

My average resting heart rate is around 55
I am fat but do quite a bit of exercise

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/03/2022 20:57

I am moderately active I suppose - 10k steps a day, sometimes nearer 20k. I am also a massive panicker!

DH has got atrial fibrilation and he's been told to seek medical advice if his heart rate drops below 50 bpm for a prolonged period.

Mummyneedsacoffee · 07/03/2022 20:59

Mine is currently 52. I cycle, run or walk every day.
55 is good Smile

BananaPie · 07/03/2022 21:00

Mine is around 40 resting. I thought that was normal. I’m very active and in my mid 40s.

bossox · 07/03/2022 21:01

Mine is 49 on apple watch consistently since I got it which is a month or so ago now. 70 -80 on a brisk walk or when active.

I am not an athlete AT ALL and am quite often very lazy oops. Feel fine. Touch wood!

dementedpixie · 07/03/2022 21:01

Mine is always below 60

Low resting heart rate
WhatIsThisPlease · 07/03/2022 21:17

Mine varies between 49 and 55. No need to freak out!!

alwayswrighty · 07/03/2022 21:32

Average for me is 47 but I run several times a week and have done for years.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/03/2022 21:40

Thank you for all these reassuring posts! Interestingly mine is quite high when walking - about 115 - 125 - but that tends to be up a steep hill carting loads of stuff (laptop and other kit). It drops back down quickly so I always assumed that was normal.

Mine is usually about 45 to 50. I talked to a cardiologist about this once and she said cardiologists think the official normal range should be brought down to 50. (And she was perfectly happy with mine). I was in my early 50s when I spoke to the cardiologist.

KylieCharlene · 08/03/2022 17:38

My resting hr is around 55.
I'm not very fit, slightly overweight, smoke a couple of cigs a day (trying to give up) and even when I'm briskly walking my hr rarely reaches 70.

Mine is around 58 but when i up the exercise, it hovers around 48. It has always been low and even at my cardiology appointments ( congenital heart defect) it is never mentioned.

MsMeNz · 08/03/2022 20:05

I think it seems fine, but if it goes much lower than your normal worth a follow up. A guy who used to work to me had his dip into the 40s, saw on his Apple watch went to GP and within 6 hours he was having open heart surgery. So not to scare you what you said seems normal but good to be aware of it goes low into the 40 and that's not your normal best to check out.

olliecollie · 08/03/2022 20:07

Mine is the same kyliecharlene. Im 55 very overweight and unfit, never ever get higher than 80s even working as a carer or walking dogs.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 08/03/2022 20:10

It depends whether you are having symptoms.
Mine is around 47-55 at rest and because I'm experiencing ongoing fatigue I may need a pacemaker.
I'm have a 24 hour heart monitor soon to see how much my heart rate varies over a 24 HR period.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/03/2022 20:29

Ooft @MsMeNz - I will definitely keep an eye on that! @Cozytoesandtoast00 no fatigue, and tbh if it wasn’t for the Fitbit I would have no awareness of it at all. I hope things work out okay with your monitor.

I’ve just checked back and it was 64 mostly, and dropped to 61 within a couple of days of quitting smoking. Today is 57. I do also wonder how accurate these devices are.

My resting heart rate is around 38. I'm 52 and fit.

MN thinks it's far too low, but no doctor has ever been in the least concerned. In fact when I went to the doctor with no other symptoms but this unusually low HR he actually laughed.
