ok I can understand emetaphobes being concerned at it hitting the news

but I can't help looking at the news and thinkging 'slow news day is it?'

bugs always go round, isn't novovirus just a catch-all for these types of gastric bugs (much as rhinovirus is for colds)

mild winter means more bugs go round

it's a mild D&V bug normally (any illness can be dangerous for the very young, very old and imuno-impaired)

what am I missing?

Nice lady, thank you very much

I hope you all get the vom bug, but leave me out of it please.

My friend is dying of cancer, aggressive chemo, if she gets this bug it will kill her!!
I will tell her about your caring attitude to others!

TheIceQueen · 04/01/2008 12:54

LOTF - I know your financial situation isn't great ( - did your DH get home ok last night? I know you were worried he'd be stuck at work). But I have to agree with hippi a little....although not so sharply. If he has this D&V thing he shouldn't really be at work - regardless of how cr*p his employers are (I know I've been there - I got bolloxed once for staying off work as I was throwing up and had given them such "short notice" that I wouldn't be in.........I only worked in a care home for the elderly!!!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 04/01/2008 12:55

On second thought as he is not being sick, I think it is probably caused by some crap he ate off the pastie wagon that goes round to his work rather than this bug thing.
I too had it last ear and thought I was going to die, he ospital having anti puking drugs pumped into his groin.

we caught noro at the hospital a couple of years ago. Poor dd (then 8months) was in hozzie for 2 weeks and nearly died. the rest of us just D&V'ed for 48 hours. It wasn't very nice. I seriously hope no-one is stupid enough to go to work or school with this and pass it on.

No Kerry, apparently immunity is short lived, so you can catch it again

needmorecoffee · 04/01/2008 12:58

I don't think this one does. DD, had it at 8 months then again at 15 months (week in hozzie) and again last year (nother 2 week hozzie stay). Confimred as noro each time. (in case you're wondering, she has severe CP and epilepsy and nearly dies with these things and needs hydrating)

WendyWeber · 04/01/2008 12:58

Well it mutates I think, KM - so maybe a bit of immunity (fingers crossed) but it can be different next time it comes round and then you get it again

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 04/01/2008 12:58

but some people must have imunity like me..i am going to get this now arent i

Novovirus is a collective term though not a virus in itself

it is a collective term for viruses that result in D&V and affect the gastro-intestinal tract

so going along talking about catching the novovirus isn't accurate .. is it

(awaits correction)

Just to add to Wendy's advice - my friend is a senior nurse and she also recommends washing your hands every hour or so.

WendyWeber · 04/01/2008 13:00

LotF, I think you're right - if your DH had this he would be puking and he would probably be prostrate as well.

mankyscotslass · 04/01/2008 13:01

Hippipotami, sympathies.Last time I had this I too failed to make the loo and when in bed slept on a towel and a bed mat. Horrible bug.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 04/01/2008 13:01

That last post got 'Ds'd' so didn't come out properly.
I was trying to say, I think I am being over zealous and there is a chance he does not have it as he is not sick.
I only heard about it yesterday, by which time DH had been to work all week with the trots buthas not been sick. I would have thought if he did have it, he would be sick by now?
Last year, when i had it I had the double ender thing going on too, with head in sink, butt on lav and it was awful, though I lost 10lbs...

I am sorry, but i do get fed up with people who rip straight in, really nasty like.

LilRedWG · 04/01/2008 13:02

All your questions answered.

hippipotami · 04/01/2008 13:02

LOTF, I did not rip in, I was exasperately asking a question.
I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt if I don't understand the tone of their post, but never mind

WendyWeber · 04/01/2008 13:02

zippi, we hardly ever get D&V bugs either (might be something to do with my cooking - cast-iron stomachs!) but we did get this one. So watch it!

Oh, I should have added taps to my list of things to disinfect - and the handwashing, Mercy!

Mercy · 04/01/2008 13:03

Info from the Health Protection Agency

needmorecoffee · 04/01/2008 13:03

Fio, was visiting dd's SN school last year. 90% of the kids are in wheelchairs with many with trachs and oxygen but 10% are mobile with learning disabilities. Some twat sent in his son with D&V. The school nurse had to call him home to pick the poor lad up and the dad came in swearing and ranting. All he was concerned with is that he didn't have to look after his son, not the physically disabled children this lad was touching!

WendyWeber · 04/01/2008 13:03

AND DON'T KEEP TOOTHBRUSHES ANYWHERE NEAR THE LOO!!!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 04/01/2008 13:04

Might I apologise Hippo. I am sorry.

No worries LOTF, I am sorry about your troubles, I admit I do not know of them.

Perhaps my fear of catching this thing is clouding my judgement a little.

I hope your dh feels better soon, tell him to stay away from those dodgy pastries!
