Incontinence after catheter

clairebear610 · 04/03/2022 19:56

I've been in hospital whilst currently pregnant and had a catheter removed today before leaving. Have noticed since I got home I'm having quite bad incontinence which I haven't had before. Am using pads and just praying it's temporary but does anyone have any experience of this and did it return to normal fairly quickly? Thanks

What was the catheter for?

FelicityBeedle · 04/03/2022 20:00

I’m not a doctor or nurse, but I do work in a hospital. It’s not uncommon for patients to have a bit of incontinence when they have their Caths out, I’ve seen it more in men but it does seem to happen to women too. It resolves after a few days typically

Thanks so much both of you. I had to have it for a cerclage removal procedure but also because of a separate issue of severe dehydration caused by norovirus which was bad timing and meant two days on fluids. I'm feeling so much better now but my only concern is the leaking I'm having which I'm just praying will resolve itself quickly as it seems quite bad currently but I guess the catheter has only been out a few hours.

Of it hasn’t resolved within a couple of days, seek advice. It can be normal initially

Thank you for the reassurance and advice @2022IamHavingYa. Just praying it resolves itself within a couple of days as you say 🤞

Just came on to say thanks all for responding and it turns out it was my waters breaking...silly me but what a relief no incontinence! Luckily baby was full time and arrived safely. Thanks all :-)

Ah, congratulations OP! Brilliant story too. Well done and enjoy your new baby

clairebear610 · 11/03/2022 04:43

Thanks @Ringsender2. I can't believe how silly I was, it was the contractions a few hours later that made me realise. And sorry, I meant 'full term'. Smile
