Can anybody help me interpret these blood test results pls?

Can anybody help me interpret various bloods tests I've had recently? I struggle getting appointments with my GP and through to surgery.

I'm 48 and had Delta in September and struggled both during and afterwards with fatigue and brain fog. I had assumed the brain fog was possibly due to Long Covid (or perimenopause though I'd had no symptoms prior to Covid) so blood tests were done.

Receptionist said my original Thyroid test was fine but a Livi GP said borderline. She ordered B12 and Viramin D tests etc.

I've gone for further tests on the back of low B12. I have been vegetarian for 30 years. My mother has pernicious anemia.

Trouble is it is hard for me to interpret just how low any of these results might be and whether it's PA, Covid or Peri.

B12 is 148
Folate is 7
Vitamin D is 20
TSH is 6
Ferritin is 58
N-terminal Btype 52

Your b12, folate and vitamin d are all low. Low B12 doesn’t necessarily mean pernicious anaemia, you would need an intrinsic factor antibody blood test for that. My levels of B12 and Vit D were lower than yours but they would only tell me to take over the counter supplements. Some surgeries are more generous and will prescribe oral b12 which is cyanocobalamin. If you were found to have PA you’d get the injections.

Low vitamin D can cause all sorts of symptoms, I felt much worse with low vit D than I did with low b12. I’ve become vegan since getting the results and take vit c, d and b12 supplements every day. Recent bloods showed my levels have risen to acceptable levels.

Best to speak to GP first though about the results in case they want to put you on a more intensive course.

Sorry can’t comment on the other results as don’t know much about them

Thanks, that's really helpful.

I had a follow up blood test this week to check for PA so will await those results.

I've got a script for a high strength vitamin D tablet and B12 tablets in the meantime (though appreciate my body might not absorb them if it is PA).
I feel tired, pale, terrible brain fog and memory loss. I have also felt very low in mood. Wondering if the Vitamin D might be having an impact there too and not just B12.

Glad you bloods have improved.

You need intrinsic factor and parietal cell antibody blood tests to confirm if PA it not.

TSH is definitely too high, top end of the NHS range is 4.2. Did they test any other thyroid parameters?

inininsomnia · 04/03/2022 18:14

With several low results for nutrients, it might be worth asking for a test for coeliac disease, which can prevent absorption of these things. Hope you feel better soon.

Not sure - what would these be classed under on the blood test results?

Thanks - GP just said they were taking extra bloods to check...

Thank you. I will look into this.

Other thyroid markers are FT4 (free T4), T4, T3, FT3, Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) or anti-thyroglobulin (anti-Tg) antibodies.

Thanks genome
I'll take a look in the morning at my results and see if these are on there. I have a few sets as the originals didn't test for B12 etc.

I could only see this other marker.

Serum free T4 level 10.5 pmol
