Voice issues, Reflux? Muscle tension dysphonia?

I thought I’d turn here as hopefully someone or even if anyone knows potentially, I’ve seen my GP.

In November time I was at an event, prior to the gig It was noisy and I felt I was trying to speak over the noise. I then felt a pain in my lower neck but just ignored and drank plenty of water as I don’t drink alcohol really. After this gig I was with my pal and we spoke late on and again (voice overuse) for weeks after I was getting a pain whenever I tried to speak and my voice was hoarse. I just rested it and in time things went back to normal but still noticed vocal fatigue now and again.

Lately last week I could hear this odd noise, turned out it was my breathing on inhaling in/breathing in. It wheezed everytime. Eventually this went but I made a trip to my GP, she tested my bloods (full blood, thyroid, bone profile) she listened to my chest, and she also done oxygen check on finger - all these came back fine. The wheeze did go so I didn’t panic so much but I had been also struggling to yawn as felt breathless.

This weekend I then went out for a meal, again noisy bar. I barely spoke. But at time felt my voice. Again sipped water. Ever since though whenever I’m speaking even a few words, it hurts and is very uncomfortable. The pain is bad and it feels my voice is strained and I’m scared it’s gonna go. Just how sore it is!

My GP did say the next step was a referral to ENT but my mum has waited 6 months on hers, I could use wage and get a private app quicker as it is worrying me but at same time i’m unsure. I do have a history of reflux, anxiety, eds Hypermobility but have had no reflux attacks that I’m aware of recently.

Google keeps leading me to muscle tension dysphonia vs vocal cord dysfunction and I’m confused as they both sound pretty similar. Just i’m unsure if it’s recongised NHS.

I guess from this if anyone can relate or advise! (I will see GP again but do have a wait)

I think i posted on your other thread. I suffer from silent reflux and during bad flare ups I've had really bad wheezing to the point I used to squeak wheeze when I talked and wake myself up from wheezing in my sleep.

I have muscle tension dysphonia. Was diagnosed at the end of last year. Have a look on YouTube for lax vox exercises. They've really helped me. I'll see if I can link the video for you. Even if you don't have MTD I don't think they can do any harm so give them a go. It's horrible to live with so you have my sympathy, people think it's just a sore throat but the psychological impact of not being able to hold a natural conversation has been really upsetting for me. I avoid 1 to 1 social interaction like the plague now as I just can't converse for longer than 30 minutes without my voice going which is very embarrassing and frustrating. Best of luck with it. Some tips the speech therapist gave me, sucking on sweets (boiled sweets rather than strepsils), no caffine/alcohol, yawning to relax the larynx.
