mistletoemiggins · 03/01/2008 21:16

apparently she has been tested for MS & that is negative but just not sure why they would run further tests

I was in hospital recently, didn't have to have a LP, had to have a CT scan. I couldn't walk and couldn't stop vomiting, and lost feeling to one side of my body.

mistletoemiggins · 03/01/2008 21:22

and what was it ELF?

OP posts:
TheBlonde · 03/01/2008 21:22

it could be the miller fisher thing

basically your immune system goes awry and attacks your nervous system
my friend couldn't walk, eyes started to go droppy
very scary

TheBlonde · 03/01/2008 21:22

are you okay now ELF?

mistletoemiggins · 03/01/2008 21:22

what is the miller fisher thing?
is it curable?

OP posts:
TheBlonde · 03/01/2008 21:23

sorry dinner is burning.. google it
will be back later

ELF1981 · 03/01/2008 21:23

they discharged me as having "hemipligic migraines" which for the last month has seen me with terrible headaches, severe sickness and unable to get out of bed.
The docs think that it was triggered by a viral infection too.

My dad recently had a viral infection which attacked his nervous system and mirrored the symptoms of parkins disease.

Nasty things viral infections.

What is Miller Fisher Syndrome?
Miller Fisher syndrome is a rare, acquired nerve disease that is considered to be a variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome. It is characterized by abnormal muscle coordination, paralysis of the eye muscles, and absence of the tendon reflexes. Like Guillain-Barré syndrome, symptoms may be preceded by a viral illness. Additional symptoms include generalized muscle weakness and respiratory failure. The majority of individuals with Miller Fisher syndrome have a unique antibody that characterizes the disorder.

Is there any treatment?

Treatment for Miller Fisher syndrome is identical to treatment for Guillain-Barré syndrome: intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) or plasmapheresis (a procedure in which antibodies are removed from the blood) and supportive care.

What is the prognosis?

The prognosis for most individuals with Miller Fisher syndrome is good. In most cases, recovery begins within 2 to 4 weeks of the onset of symptoms, and may be almost complete within 6 months. Some individuals are left with residual deficits. Relapses may occur rarely (in less than 3 percent of cases).
